I opted for the Mierna. I have had it in now for over 3 years and it works perfectly. Plus I have not had a period in about 3 years. That to me was the biggest selling point. Plus since I am only 26 I wanted to use one that wouldn't cause much scarring, in case I changed my mind about not having anymore kids.

I highly recommend the IUD that emits hormones. I first had the copper IUD and that came out on it's own because of super heavy periods. The new (hormone) IUD has been great and I'm all set for five years. My sister-in-law had tubal ligation and then changed her mind after her eldest son died in a freak accident. So she had to use another woman's egg to get pregnant. you never know.

I was reading yesterday about a lady on this site that is having major pain with Mirena and reading some of those responses, so have other women who have used it. Not immediately, but a few months after getting it. I will tell you what I told her about it. A friend of mine had the IUD and wanted to start using my ob/gyn. He would not even see her until she removed the IUD and he will not even consider it for any of his patients. I trust his judgment so much (as I'm sure most women do about theirs)that I have bad feelings about the Mirena. So--just do what you are doing and ask lots of questions before making a decision. Good Luck!!

Hi...I am going to my essure class this tuesday at BAMC. We all must have this class before the procedure...I suppose to make sure...I am 39 and have two beautiful boys...so I am done. I opted for this since it is an out patient procedure and seems very easy, plus a non hormonal approach since the pills even low dosage have hormones...the IUD was not for me due to the side effects...such as heavy cramping and bleeding during mentration.

Go to essure.com to get some more information and good luck!

I have done both, the mirena hurt my husband and I had horrible cramps from it. I had the Essure proccedure dont the Thursday before x-mas. It took less than an hour, I did not feel a thing, and by that afternoon I was shopping. If you are truly sure that you dont want to have any more children, go with the essure. There are no hormones involved and no downtime. Hope this helps!!

I looked into both (and having my tubes tied) and opted for the copper IUD (paraguard). I didn't want the hormones that Mirena has. I didn't want to undergo anethesia or surgery that having my tubes tied or Essure would involve. I also wanted something that would take effect immediately. The copper IUD lasts 10 yrs vs 5 for Mirena. This way, I can wear it into menopause.

Essure takes a few months to take effect. I read the web postings of a number of women who had it. Unlike the IUD that your Dr puts in in just a few minutes in the office, Essure should be done under anesthesia. There were a few women who did not get this and they went under a lot of pain. Having an IUD put is not like that at all. Plus, if you don't like it or change your mind, you can have it removed. To me, the copper IUD seemed like the best option.

I HATE MIRENA!!!

I hurt, I cramped, it was 9 months of physical hell that resolved within 2 weeks of having it removed. Celibacy works with or without an IUD, and sex was so painful it happened only twice during the time that I had it in.

Tubal ligation worked for me - it's pretty permanent, but it sounds like permanent is what you're looking for.

I have the mirena iud and i like it.the whole process took less than 10 min. There was a little cramping right after but it was gone within an hr of having it put in and wasnt bad at all.It will last for 5 years and can be taken out before that if you want.I have had a couple of mornings where i was a little unconfortable when i first woke up but also not bad.Maybe from my c section to.I have had it for 5 months now and havent had any problems.Periods are normal and the bleeding is a little lighter. So far so good.there is nothing to remember or do so it is really easy.If you feel a little poking the doc can trim the string.Hope some of this helps good luck.

I received the Essure procedure in June 2007. The whole preping and procedure took about 30 minutes to complete. From receiving pain meds to the depo shot to protect me just in case (till the tubes cover up). It was all done in my doctors office and I DID NOT have to go under general which I wanted to avoid! I believe that it has been the BEST thing ever for me to decide! It really is that easy. They will do a panel on you 3 months after the procedure to make sure your tubes are blocked and that is all. I believe that was more painful then the procedure its self! If you have any questions dont hesitate to email me here or at ____@____.com!

Sincerely

I have had an IUD (Minera) for 3 years and I love it! No side effects and barely a period at all. A box of tampons can last me 3 or 4 months, thats how little I need them. I highly recommend it and have to my friends. One just got one and she loves it to. My sister in law had her tubes tide and she wishes she would have done what I did. She has horrible monthlys while I have none. I forget most of the time about it. It hurt for the first couple of days after getting it put in. I.E cramping and so on but after about 6 months my periods are pretty much gone and no bloating or other symptoms of regular cycles.

I love mine and it give me a choice if I want more children or not. If someone tells me no then I for sure want too. So this way its my choice.

GOOD LUCk on your decision!

I can only speak to the Mirena IUD; I got one after my son was born. I love it and have had ZERO problems. Obviously, that is not the case for everyone, but it sure was the perfect solution for me.

Considering that you already have 3 + 2 step and are 35, I would certainly look into the Essure if I were you, but that's just my 2 cents!

Congrats on your lovely family and good luck with this decision. Luckily for us, there are many great options out there these days.

I got my IUD (Mirena) when my 2nd daughter was ~ 8 weeks old. Can I just say that I absolutely love it!!! With everything that we have to think about, schedule, plan, etc, etc...at least my birth control is taken care of!! I too didn't know if I wanted to have another child, thinking more along the lines of "no", but the Mirena gives me the opportunity to breathe, think & evaluate my life with the precious kiddos we have instead of getting another surprise! Hope this helps! I haven't had any of the side effects that have been mentioned...in fact, I barely have a period & really never cramp. (& my body can dole out some world class crampage!)

I can't speak to the tubal, but if you have any doubts about having more, I would suggest the IUD. I have had some problems with mine, it took my body about 6+ months to settle down with it, but we weren't sure we were done having children. Once we were sure, he had a vasectomy. Good luck, only you can decide what is right for you and your family.
Good luck! A.

My ob-gyn strongly recommends the Mirena IUD. It has very few side effects and you pretty much quit having a period after about 5 weeks. You can keep it for 5 years. Also, if your insurance won't pay for any or all of it, Mirena will finance with no interest. If you compare the cost of the IUD with the monthly co-pay on birth control pills you come out ahead over the 5 years.

I had some trouble with cramping at first, but a large % of women do not. It is very easy to have it removed (about 2 minutes; and FYI about 5 minutes to have it inserted). Google Mirena if you want to know more.
