IUD Pain

About 2 months ago I had an IUD inserted. It was horrible! The pain was tremendous and the cramping was bad. After a couple of days I thought I would be fine. I was wrong. I'm on my 2nd period since getting it inserted and the cramping is unbelievable. I get these sharp pains that make me jump! I always had horrible cramps, but these are really sharp! I don't know if I should get this taken out, if I should suffer through and hope that they get better, I just don't know what to do! In between my periods I will get cramping and it's the same sharp pains, just not as often. Today is the worst day of my period where I'll bleed the heaviest and have the worst cramping, but this pain is just tremendous and I don't know if I can suffer through it all of the time if it doesn't go away. I have my 2 month check-up on Monday with the doctor and I'm going to talk to him then about it, but I just wanted to see if anyone else experienced these sharp cramps and what I can do to help alleviate them!

What can I do next?

Hi E.. I was just about to give up on my I.U.D. and have it removed. But I'm glad I stuck it out because my periods and cramps have subsided, and its great. My period is almost nonexistant, and no more cramps! For a while there I was bleeding more often than not, and I was starting to think it wasn't going to work for me. But although it seemed to take forever,(6 months)everything is okay now, and I'm finally enjoying the benefits of having it. Try to stick it out if you can. To me, six months of inconvenience and cramps were worth five years of period-free existance. Good Luck! T.

Hi E.,
I also have the IUD and did not experience the pain that you are talking about but am still questioning whether or not to have it taken out. I have had it for about 7 months now and just bleed whenever...very unpredictable. Anyway, you should see your doctor. That kind of pain should not be...call the doc. Hope it gets better.

I had the same problem and went to the doctor- he said we could wait, and test, and do sono to see if its not in there right... I said no- take it out. He took it out reluctantly. It took a few months for the cramping to go away, but I'm finally back to normal.

This may be a little late, but i had and IUD for 6 mos had it removed and about 2 mos after that on my birthday i have this sharp pain on my lower left side below my belly button, my dr did an U/S and nothing was shown.
They want to open me up and look that way, i dont want that.
I get the pain right before the start of my period and during, once my period starts to slow down so does the sharp, burning pain.
They asked me if i ever had endometriosis, with my knowledge no, never!
Then i was reading on the web how some women that get a c/s can get endometriosis!
I was floored!
Well, i just wanted to let you know about my pains and also wanted to know what your dr told you.
Please let me know.
Thanks

I have the IUD Mirena. I got it when my son was 2 months old and he is now 3. The only pains I had was when it was inserted adn they went away a day later. I would see your doctor as soon as possible becuase I have not had any periods since getting it or any pain. Maybe its not in correctly or something else could be causing the pain. I hope this helps.

I never even had a 3 months check up or anything. My doctor inserted the Mirena and i didnt go back for a year, That was 3 years ago they may do things differently now.

Many women experience this with the IUD. It usually lasts for 6 months to a year and then the bleeding and cramping subsides a bit. As far as getting it taken out, it really depends on what's important to you. When I had it, I had really bad cramping and bleeding but I could deal with it because there wasn't another birth control option that I liked. So, to me it was worth it. Good luck.

Hi E.,
I had an IUD inserted in October by a midwife. She told me that if I had pains, like you are describing, to first take motrin. If that isn't helping, then I needed to get back to her to have it checked before the 3 month check up that you have after insertion. I did have some bad pains about an hour after, but mine got better. I would suggest having it checked soon to see if there is a reason for the pain. it could need to be adjusted, or there may be a more serious problem. I hope that this helps you and I hope that your pain starts to ease.
Take care.
