I have a doctors appointment to have my Mirena IUD removed as we want to add to our family. I have a history with infertility (tried for 5 years to get pregnant with my daughter. Used Chlomid. Diagnosed with PCOS.) The doctor who helped me get pregnant and delivered my daughter recommended the IUD as birth control. So now that we want to try for another baby I have a couple of questions from you experienced mamas. It hurt when we placed it, does it hurt during removal? And did you have any trouble conceiving after you had it removed? How long did it take to get pregnant again? Thanks in advance for your help.
Thank you so much for the responses. I had it taken out yesterday and it didn't hurt a bit. The Pap Smear hurt more than the retrieval. Now we hope and pray for a quick pregnancy.

I had my Mirena IUD removed 9 months ago after having it in for 4 years and till this day I have not conceived, I had no problem getting pregnant the last three times.
The removed was 3 second long and no pain at all.

Removal - If I recall correctly, the Mirena is t-shaped so removal shouldn't be all that bad. It all depends on the individual's tolerance for pain/discomfort and how gentle the physician can be. Typically with a t-shaped IUD, the 'arms' of the T are flexible so that they sort of 'flip up' as the IUD is being retrieved.
Conception - With most hormonal contraception (in addition to being a barrier method, the Mirena has the added benefit of time released hormones) many typical women are able to conceive the next month or within in a few months of removal. It will all depend on how willing your endocrine system is in initiating the proper release and flush of hormones. Since you have PCOS, you probably don't need me to tell you that *laugh*.
Your best bet might be to start charting your cycles and taking your temperature on a daily basis to figure out what's going on with your cycle. I've lived with PCOS for such a long time, but managed to get pregnant through charting/temping. As you probably know, people with PCOS don't typically have 28-day cycles with ovulation occuring on day 14 so those folks like us have to really watch for the 'ovulatory' signs (presence of clear, thin cervical fluid and significant temperature shift). So...I know that doesn't directly answer your question but to be honest, those of us who have PCOS cannot really rely on a typical answer since our endocrine system isn't always willing to cooperate or play nicely. Hope this helps and good luck to you!

I had my mirena in for 3 years. I had it removed in June and was pregnant by December. My new daughter is now 9 months old and we have decided to use the mirena again. Inserting the mirena hurts a lot more than having it removed. It was very quick and painless. I hope all goes well for you!
I actually have a question for you. I have the merena and I'm concerned that its nort in right. When my husband and I are together he says that he can feel it. Is that normal or should I go have it checked?
Hello H., Well....In my opinion I really would'nt suggest the IUD to ANYONE. I had a very bad experience with it, I decided to have it put in after I had my son, of course the doctors strongly suggested that I get it put in and so I did. OMG! was it painful! And I DO NOT compare it to having a pap-smear,,it was really painful,well at least for me it was, but anyways 2 days after I had it put in I started to notice sharp pains by the rectum area, I felt like I had a sharp knife going up my rear, well evidently it got lost and I had to go under many procedures for them to find it, they did everything!Cameras and all and they still couldnt find it! So their last option for me was a cat scan and so they finally found it, it was laying between my uterus and my rectum,,now they had told me that it probably fell out but thank god I didnt listen, well then I had to go through surgery to have it removed,,I had massive internal bleeding and they had to due a emergency surgery, it took them about 2 hours,I am soo thankful that I listened to that little voice in me and stayed after my doctor, I wasnt convinced,,after that they had told me that if I ever tried to concieve that It may take a couple of years and that I might miss carry because of all the scaring on my uterus, needless to say, we tried for 1 year,I mean my son was 5 years old when I got pregnant..I am soo thankful that we had our little girl, we named her angel. Well the reason why i felt leaving this messege is to tell all women that the IUD is something that I wouldnt suggest and that if you can opt for some other type of birth control do it..And I wish you the best of luck.

I did not have the Mirena IUD. It was another copper brand. However I had a wonderful experience with it. I kept it for a little over 8 years with no complications. And when I had it removed I was surprised at how quick and painless it was. There was only a little discomfort. And as for conceiving again...I got pregnant that same month! I also have the Mirena and had to get the first one removed because it wasn't placed properly. It actually doesn't hurt at all. Just discomfort. My doctor told me to cough on the count of three and when I did he removed it and that was that. Unfortunately, I replaced it because I didn't want any kids but a friend of mine concieved within a few months. Good luck.
I had the same experience as you with the insertion of the Mirena and so my doctor and I knew I wouldn't be able to handle the removal well. I had outpatient surgery to have it removed and a new one inserted. No memories at all. As for conceiving...I'm done conceiving so can't speak on that. All the best.
Didn't hurt anymore than a normal pap smear. I was pregnant in six months. I have endometriosis so we thought that was my problem, but I did get pregnant. The second pregnancy I was pregnant after just two months of trying. The next three pregnancy I concieved the first night we tried.
I know when I'm ovulating and my hubbies little guys are strong swimmers I guess. We plan on trying one more time (clock is ticking..I'm 41 now) soon. Hopefully it will be as easy. I had two miscarriages between child 2 and 3. Turns out I have a disorder that causes blood clots and I lost three babies because of it...one pregnancy was a set of twins.
I inject Lovenox everyday and I managed to carry my third child to term.

I haven't experienced this personally, but my good friend had an IUD and conceived very quickly after it was removed (few months, maybe). She did say it was quite painful to have it removed, but hers ended up working it's way further inside that they usually do also. I guess that happens sometimes. Good luck trying for #2!!
