Piggybacking Jane's dessert question, do you guys eat cake and ice cream at little kids' birthday parties?
Our son prefers not to eat sweets, but my husband and I, on the other hand, have a TERRIBLE sweet tooth. We've instructed our son to accept whatever is offered to him at parties.....and then to discreetly pass it to us which we gobble down while he goes off to play. Sometimes we ask for a piece outright. Sometimes we go back for seconds. I personally have no shame when it comes to sweet treats. Cake and ice cream always taste best at birthday parties! (especially in front of other parents who decline but obviously look like they want some hee hee).
Of course we don't eat it all the time. Actually, the only time we eat cake and ice cream is at birthday parties. It makes all those birthday parties so much more tolerable.
i.
love.
cake.
ice cream too. but i like 'em separately. no ice cream bogging down my cake!
i was one happy girl when ice creams came out in cake flavors.
sadly for me, my kids like cake too, so i never got to come to this excellent arrangement when they were little.
because we're eating very healthily these days, i don't ever have cake in the house. bummer. now i want cake!

Guilty as charged. And it doesn't help that I have creative children who make their own cakes, and often their own ice cream, for their children's parties. Ahhh... I LOVE other people's birthdays!

If it's offered I always say yes!
If it's not offered I will mooch off the kids since they don't always eat it all anyway.
I have no shame! ;)

Oh heck yes! Isn't that my reward for figuring out what the birthday kid would like, obtaining and wrapping the gift, cajoling my kid into drawing a card, making sure I fit it in my schedule, and then standing around chit chatting with strangers while my kid gets overstimulated in a bouncy house? Because if it's not my cake-god-given right, I am not going anymore.

I never turn down any yummy food that is offered to me! I am all too happy to eat cake and ice cream at a kid's birthday party, but I always wait for the food to be offered to me. Sometimes I can tell by the size of the cake that there won't be enough for kids AND adults.
Conversely, if I expect the parents to stay at the party, I always make sure there is enough cake for everyone.

I get a skinny slice (not due to calories, but I only like a 'little' sweet) and no ice cream since I can't do lactose. I might also scrape off the frosting-- too sweet for me!
I think all kids birthday parties should come with martinis or other cocktails-- that would make them far more tolerable. My husband and I trade favors-- he goes to sporting events for hours at time with his buddies and the trade-off is that he does the birthday parties too. Fair!

If there's enough for the kids and adults, why not?
I'm sure they'd rather see people eat it than let it go into the garbage after
paying for it.

One of my favorite foods in the world is birthday cake. The kind you get from the store with buttercream icing. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. So, if the parents are offering, I'm usually first in line to take a piece. :)

I do not have a sweet tooth, but I do love birthday cake and ice cream. Parents don't attend kids parties where I live, but sometimes I get offered a piece when I arrive for pickup, and I never turn it down!

I LOVE cake. If I am at a birthday party and the adults are offered cake, I will always accept. Of course, I make sure all the kids get theirs first. The way I see it, the host doesn't want to bring home a ton of leftover cake, so I'm doing her a favor by eating it. : )
Honestly though, I think if an adult is expected to be at the party, or is specifically invited (like a grandparent), they should be offered cake. I always make sure to have enough for the adults at my own kids' parties.

Can I invite you and your husband to my parties? Invariably whatever dessert(s) I put out go to waste which is such a shame. Personally I sample whatever is offered so long as is there enough to go around for the kids.

I don't think I have ever been to a birthday party where there was not enough cake and ice cream for all the adults and kids. Maybe it is a regional thing, but I would always assume that any adults attending would want a slice.
And yes, 99% of the time I will have a slice. Or 2. Unless I am really watching my weight. (Or if it is covered in food coloring, in which case it is easy for me to pass).

My favorite breakfast as a child was a bit of left over ice cream cake. My parents were awesome indulgent that way. Be sure you leave enough so that the kids can have a treat, if they want it.

As far as I'm concerned, every holiday is a cake holiday. We've started getting a cake for our anniversary (it's like the "birthday" of our marriage!) and I LOVE wedding cake. The only reason I agreed to go to my husband's cousin's vow renewal thing (because I 1. don't believe in vow renewals and 2. really disagree with how this couple is trying to force their gay son back into the closet) is because I was promised wedding cake.

It depends on the cake. If it came from a typical grocery store bakery, then no. I don't like either the cake or the frosting on it.
I have a friend that makes her own cakes from scratch and they are so fantastic that I might eat three cupcakes before I've realized what I've done.

If there is obviously enough to go around, and it is offered, then YES!
Unless it looks yucky for some reason... like... that gross whipped (or whatever that stuff is) frosting. Give me butter cream or cream cheese, or chocolate fudge icing! I have been fooled a time or two by the whipped stuff (from a distance, and then once it is handed to me I see what it is). I try to be discreet, but yuck!

I am having trouble understanding your question. You mean to tell me that there are people that dont eat cake a birthday parties? (haha) If someone bought it (or made it) and there is enough I usually partake. I do notice sometimes people decline when offered which is fine. We have done costco cakes because they are very reasonably priced but there is usually a lot left over. I try to help out the host so they don't have too much left over. Most often though I do cupcakes because it is easy to send people home with leftovers and its kind of built in portion control.

Depends on how carefully I'm watching my diet or how good the cake is. Some of my kids' friends have moms who bake excellent cakes from scratch so I'll carve out some calories in my day to make room for that. If it's a standard grocery store cake, it's usually not worth it for me to sacrifice elsewhere.
I bake and decorate all of my kids' cakes and I LOVE when the adults indulge in a slice. I'm definitely not a food pusher because I know how hard it can be to stick to a nutrition plan but I always offer and am flattered when someone says "well...maybe a small slice..." and then enjoys the heck out of it.
ETA: Most of my kids are picky about cake and ice cream too...one doesn't like frosting, one only eats frosting, one only eats ice cream, one only eats chocolate cake, etc. So if I don't take a slice I usually have a forkful of whatever they didn't eat anyway.

nope, wouldn't do that... my kids sometimes accept, sometime decline cake at parties, depending on their mood/level of hunger that day. the ONLY time I eat cake at a party not put on by me is if it's OFFERED to me, anything else is just rude imo.

No, we don't have a sweet tooth and just don't eat many sweets at all.
We have always had a small birthday cake for each other for the birthday person and typically, 1 piece is cut and the 3 of us might take a bite of the 1 piece and the rest of the cake is useless. Sometimes I will freeze the cake but last time I looked in my freezer, I threw away 2 cakes that had been there over a year.
SO... now, we will buy 1 piece of cake of the bakery and there is not as much waste.
Now my husband does love ice cream and he will eat a little scoop of ice cream occasionally. I don't eat ice cream, pies, cakes, cookies, etc. BUT... I LOVE a greasy cheeseburger every now and then!

Most of the time I will eat cake. Who DOESN'T eat cake??? BUT, if it looks like a store bought cake I usually wont. I love homemade. Even homemade from a box. But store bought usually is very cardboard tasting IMHO.
I love that you and your husband tell the kids to get cake even if they don't want it. We do that too.
hahaha

I only like really good cake. I am super picky about using too. and ice cream is not even in my top 10 of things I like sweet wise.
Now pie, cobblers, a really good lemon bar or blonde brownie, I am all over that.
