I know if you are super talented you can make anything look good, but for the rest of us, are the guidelines for where to hang photos of people. or have i just made these up ?? like I don't think i would hang photos of people in the bathroom, nor the dining room. but the living room and halls are great. so that is my first question, is there any places you don't put those photos.
If i were to walk arouond your house right now, how many studio portraits would i see and where? oh and what sizes.
just curious, I don't have much on my walls but yet,I don' know that i want 5 photos of the whole fam in each room. Although i guessits just as silly to keepthem in a drawer. I usually buy 5x7s and scatter a few on end tables and one big 10x13 over the mantel
Thanks for the replies, I guess I need to get over, no family portraits watching me pee or chew. I also have a thing about seasonal pictures, we were recently at a friends house and she had a print/ painting of an old farmhouse in winter, and it was 85 degrees out in July and i just thougth she shoudl have switched it out.
I wish I had a flair for decorating. I'll try pinterest again, I have a board of beaulful family photo ideas I'll look and see how people display them.
Long main hallway here, large collection hanging there. Mixed sizes for visual appeal.
A few (tabletop) in the master bedroom, some in family room (again-tabletop)...

Maybe it's me but when I see 8x10's all over the house, it looks odd.
I couldn't even begin to count the pictures in my home. However, there are none in the bathroom, and strangely I'm not a big fan of family pics in my bedroom.
I DO have photos up in my bathroom! lol
It's a colloge of my babies in the bathtub and I love it.
I also have photos in my dining room. I have one of each of my nieces and nephews when they were babies. Each one is a very sweet photograph, not a professional portrait. I have them displayed as 5x7s in 8x10 black frames with white matting. It matches the more formal decor.
I LOVE pictures and I am pretty sure I have some in every room and every hallway in my house.
I love pictures. I have 3 girls. I have a 2 groupings of the girls at the same ages - 1 is a group of them little with me in pic them in basket, 2 is them at 6 months, tastefully naked with tulle, boa or pearls. Then I keep a grouping in the living room of their recent pictures. I have a poster of the the three of the above the couch. 4x6 snapshots and 5x7 here and there. In the basement (family room, office, play area) I have a nice ledge around the whole room and all picturs on ledge are 4x6 or 5x7 black and white. On the wall is a large poster pictures I have of my husband/kids fishing in various places (in black and white). Finally, in my bedroom in a grouping of them as well. That's it :-)
I think it is really up to you. Where do you feel most engaged to hang particular photos or groupings? Sometimes a certain photo is just perfect in the bathroom, kitchen or some other non-traditional place. It's the memory. Some photos people keep up forever and then there are those that people change out and replace over the years. I don't have a lot of photos up, but I take a lot of photos and those shots that are just fabulous make it up. My new thing is black and white photos. I love those and the ones where you can add touches of color. Do what moves you.
We are blessed with a lovely long hallway with shelves and wall space so that's where most of the photos are displayed.
I also have awesome collages/displays in the areas where I spend the most time: the office and the laundry room.
I do have a few nice framed photos in my family and living room, though not as much because I think too many photos are distracting and defeat the purpose, you know? I mean if there are too many then they won't be noticed really, they just look like mish mash :(
I used to think it was taboo too, but we have photos in our bathroom. A team shot of my husband's uni rugby team hangs behind the toilet. A photo of a frog that took up residence in his toilet when he lived in Australia is also in the bathroom.
I can picture photos of kids in the bath, mom with her shower cap on, dad shaving, in the bathroom, why not. I am sure that there are rules about these things, but I think rules are made to be broken. So long as you have some space in which your eye can get some respite, no harm in photos in every room.
now to answer your question- we've got a collection of 7 wedding photos (4 5x7, 2 8x10 and 1 11x14), a collage of infant photos (4 3x5), and a set of 6 4x6 photos in the bedroom, which I swap out every so often.
in the livingroom, we have a family x-mas shot , two collage frames, and hubs uni and grad school grad photos.
in baby's bedroom, we have a set of 8 4x6 photos of my and my husband's dogs.

I have photo groupings on tables in the living/dining area and our bedroom, including an oil portrait of our sons. I took most of the photos. In the hallway, I have family photos from my early childhood with my parents. Of course the fridge has lots of photos on it!
I have a 34x34 framed collage and 2 black and white 8x10s kinda staggered. Then there's drawings of my husbands tattoos we had framed in our rooms.
look on Pinterest - there really are great ideas and ways to incorporate photos.
I do have quite a lot in my house. The first wall you see once in the entryway has a family picture in black & white (11x14 with glass matting) and one of my kids and one of my fiance's in black and white (8x10 with glass matting) that we had done by a photographer friend. I incorporate in photos into collage walls with other artwork, mirrors, clocks, etc. There is one hall wall that has extended family pics along with kids school pics. The family room has three large collage frames with a mixture of pics from when they were young with some professional, some snap shots.
My mom is very traditional in decorating and always said not to have photographs as the main focal point in a room where people would feel the need to comment. I'm not traiditional and she actually really likes my decorating. I think you can incorporate photos into any room of your house.

I am a photo freak!! My husband, for whatever reason, seems to have to tell people all the time that I have close to 40 large photo albums! Altho, since going digital I still have loads of photos (about three boxes) they're not in albums because I couldn't find the photo albums I liked any more - guess they quit making them.
I have NO photos in my bathrooms; scenery and flowers, but no people. My dining room has two large photo collages and on the buffet I have an array of photos - I always loved the look of it in the movies so that's where I got that idea.
As for the rest of my house - you will find photos (of all sizes) on my walls, mantel, book shelves, refrigerator, desk, computer, phone, hallway, etc. But the only professional photos are my kids' school pictures, my wedding photo, and a couple of my parents back in the 1940's. I have never gone for the professional posed look.
And yes, I also have paintings on my walls. And believe it or not, my walls are not cluttered; but no, I never switch out "seasonal" pictures.
