JFF - Who Buys the Goodies for Mom's Stocking?

Updated on December 12, 2011
K.L. asks from Erie, PA

I'm just wondering who buys things for their own stockings (so the kids don't wonder what Mamma did so wrong this year) and who gets goodies from someone else. My stocking was always quite empty until I pointed out to hubby that the kids were getting to the age where they'd notice. He seemed shocked that I would consider buying stuff for my own stocking and now takes care of filling it up...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, ladies, for all the input. I think I will continue to put one or two things in my own (so that it's not just candy and gum like last year).

As for the tradition of stockings for the adults, I guess that's because stockings are my favorite part of "secret Santa" and because my mom never stopped doing a stocking for me and my brother (so I guess I neglected to mention that my stocking at her house gets filled by other people). I have always done a stocking for my husband, so it just seemed wrong not to have one on hanging by the chimney for me ;)

my husband and I don't have stockings, just the kids. We told the kids when they were little, that Santa fills children's stockings. Now they are old enough, they know the real truth, and they don't care, as long as they have beef jerky in their stocking.

kansasmom I know your pain, my husband brought home a needle nose pliers once and put it in my beauty box, when I looked at him with chagrin like what the HEck ola is this... he said it was for those stubborn ones on the chin. He about got stabbed with it.

My husband buys stuff for mine. Although one year I did buy some candy for each person (M&Ms that came in a round M&M shaped container...I got each person their favorite color and got my daughter the purple "girl" figurine).

My MIL sends over a stocking filled with misc candy (like whole bags), toothbrush, and toothpaste for all of us.

Isn't it funny how the person that typically does the most for the family (coordinating, transporting, cleaning, cooking, shopping, caregiving, etc) doesn't seem to get taken care of by "Santa"? Just how good do we have to be????

WHY would a mom let her stocking go empty??? I'm a good wife and a good mom, and no way am I going to let my precocious kid think "mommy must be bad" because there's nothing in my stocking, lol!
I fill everyone's stockings, including my own. We all get the nuts, tangerine, and apple. The boys get a little kid candy and small stuff, I put a Toblerone with fruits and nuts in my husband's, and I put the chocolate liqueurs in mine. Everyone also gets a chocolate orange and candy cane. We all get little surprise gifts (mine aren't necessarily a surprise b/c I put them in there), and we all get one hot wheels vehicle, lol. Now if daddy wants to surprise mom with something in her stocking, awesome, but I'm not going to have an empty stocking because he failed to do so, lol!
I grew up with stockings for the parents as well (and the cat). We have a couple little cat toys for the cat, a giant bone and pull toy for the dog, and yes mom and dad have stockings too.And one gift from Santa.

My husband does. Once in a while if I see something perfect I'll buy it & give it to him to go in my stocking, but that's rare.

ETA--My mom also makes me a stellar stocking every year even though every year she says she's not doing it anymore. She does one for my sister also. Our husbands try & honestly, they're getting better at it, but nothing compares to a stocking made by mom!

I buy myself little thing's here and there, and to justify it, I save them for my stocking :) I hosted a jewelry party MONTHS ago, and got some free stuff, it's been killing me to have to save it for Christmas!!

But as Beth said... Santa fills it ;)

My husband and daughter, we also all fill up each others and have no idea what we are all giving. Most years it is overflowing and since we do not have a Fireplace our stockings are on the chair or sofas where we each sit in the living room! Pretty funny..

NO one, my husband dosn't even take the time to buy a gift. But it's going to start to backfire on him for being so selfish for all these years. the kids are older now and see how I do everything and dad does nothing. Their making up for it and my daughters have let their SO know under NO UNCERTAIN TERMS is this the way the will be treated. Oh and last year was the last year I'm buying my husband a gift. I'm shopping for myself this year Shoes on the other foot.

My husband does! I told him before we ever got married that stockings were my favorite part of all the gift-giving and Santa stuff, and that until I died, I wanted a stocking! I fill one for him too, of course. I think they're so much fun! At our house the grandparents get one filled by me as well on Christmas morning.

My kids do. I tell them it doesn't matter how much they spend, they can fill my stocking with handwritten notes if they have no money, as long as I don't wake up to an empty stocking. Last year their older sister took them shopping and they gave me lots of chocolates and a couple of beanie baby ornaments. Made my day!

Good for your husband! He's a keeper!

My children learned rather quickly how to participate in the Santa game, and they would pick up little things for Mama's stocking while Mama was picking up little things for theirs. Everybody was surprised, and everybody had fun.

Mom's stocking? What's that? Only the kids have stockings in our house. They're older now and don't believe in Santa anymore, but even when they were little, they never questioned why the adults never had stockings or presents from "Santa" like they did. I also grew up with only the kids having stockings. To be honest, this post is actually the FIRST time it's even occurred to me that grown-ups can have stockings, too. Maybe it's time to institute a new tradition in my home...

Ummm, no one. Boooo! I sort of refuse to buy my own stocking, I mean I buy EVERYTHING else for Christmas and it's kind of an issue for me. ;) I have told my husband straight up, gee it would be nice to get some stuff for my stocking some time...so what did he do? He went out on Christmas Eve and bought like 2 or 3 bags of small, wrapped chocolate candies and dumped them into my stocking. Gee, thanks.

And my son.

We have a family holiday tradition that "everyone" sneaks in one present into everyone else's stockings at some point during the night. You're NOT allowed to claim those, although we sometimes do guessing games. My son has never known his dad doesn't participate in this tradition.

I've never heard of a stocking for mom and dad.

We always have a filled a stocking for daughter.

It has never been questioned because Santa has always been associated with children around here.

I've not had a stocking since I was a kid and I really don't feel like I am missing out on anything.

*pft* Ah yah, I do it myself in this house! If it weren't for me my children wouldn't have a tree or decorated or yard or house decor. Yah, I buy my own candy to fill, just enough look like Santa stopped by and never as big as the kids. Course, I don't go hog wild on hubby either. He's not one for eating candy anyway but I'm not giving him more than I give myself. And I have had the kids wonder why Santa didn't give as much to Mommy. I tell them that Santa knows I shouldn't have too much candy at my age and weight, lol.

My mom (single parent) bought for herself, but my sister and I contributed after we outgrew Santa. Our family stockings are hung already and the family will stick little things in each other's stockings, though DH and I fill each other's. It's nice to realize that SD bought me some new nail polish and tucked it in there, or a candy bar or whatever. I don't know if she peeks, but SD isn't supposed to look before Christmas. DD doesn't really notice yet. Bulk of the stuff goes in on the 24th.

That's how we exchange gifts to each other (hubs and I). He fills mine and I fill the rest.

This year with the oldest being 4, we will each take them shopping to buy for the rest of the family. Hubby does a great job at doing this. Of couse I do the rest of the shopping and keep asking him what he thinks of each purchase or proposed purchase for the girls.

We even have a stocking for the dog and our DD mentioned the dog in her letter to Santa. Dang it! There's another $5-10! Good thing we are getting low on treats!

Santa fills the kids stockings. Mom and dad fill each others :) It would be so sad to fill my own. I love the surprises, like blue eye shadow and yellow nail polish...eek! He also does some really cute things too. My husband and i open our stockings and gifts to each other on christmas eve. This way it does not interfere with santa, and it is our special moment.

My hubby always buys my "big" gift from Santa...usually diamonds. =) And he adds in a few small things. Sometimes I add something if I find something little that I would like while Im shopping for everyone else. I like to see hubby surprised at what Santa brings me too. =)

We've always told our kids that Santa only brings gifts for the children, adults don't get their stockings filled. We hang them to decorate but my kids never questioned that part?? A couple of years ago, my girls got the idea to start putting a "gag" gift in daddy's stocking and it has become a funny Christmas morning tradition. They arrange the full deal. For me, the stocking remains empty :( Maybe one day I will get something!

What a great question. My then 5 yo daughter put the screws to my husband last year: "Why didn't mama get anything in her stocking, but you and I did, Daddy?" Dad looked stumped. And embarrassed. We'll see what happens this year!
