Job Elimination

A couple of weeks ago, my job was eliminated. For the past 15 years, I have worked as a sales and event planner for hotels in Chicago. This position demands 50+ hours per week, including nights and weekend hours. Prior to having a husband and kids, I thrived in this enviorment. But now being married and having two sons (2 and 4), I am looking at this job elimination as an opportunity to "Change things Up" a bit.
The Facts -
Hubs and I make about the same salary
We live in the city and really don't want to move right now
Would ideally love to work part time
Hotels are the only thing that I have ever done
Daycare costs are insane, so I either need a large salary to pay for the daycare + make sense to have enough take home to warrant working OR take kids out of daycare and take a large paycut to work part time, but would get to spend time with kiddos.
I am leaning towards the second, but have no idea what to look for job wise.
So what do you ladies that work part time do? How did you get into that field? How do you make this all work?

What can I do next?

Since yo have the Hotel background..utilize it.
They offer several front desk part time opportunities.
The airlines may be another place to try..F/A can work 1 week and have 3 off... Ticket agents have the ability to work as much or little as possible using shift changes. They have alot of flexibilty as well as hotel agents.
You can then have time with the kids and thought the salary may not pay what you were looking for..the time with your kids is priceless.
TAKE ADVANTAGE of staying home and working p/t if you can.
It is soo rewarding to be able to have that time with kids!
Im so glad I did!

My kids are older than yours so I looked at the schools. I really wanted to be at home when they were home and still do something. I started volunteering at their school since my youngest is now in school all day. I started subbing and networked with people at school. I eventually got a job as a teacher's aide. It doesn't pay a ton but it is significantly more than all the other part time jobs I looked into. The best part is that I'm home when my kiddos are home. It is not for everyone though. I love little kids so it is really fun for me. Good luck!

I vote for finding a way to spend time with the kiddos. Since you have worked only in hotel field it would make sense to hang in there with some other job in a hotel and chalk it up to waiting time. You never know when you might get another event planner. You won't however ever get back that time with the children.

Glad to read that you are so upbeat about it. Look into substitute teaching and you can call your own hours. Good luck.
