Job in Law Enforcement

look at some of the colleges that offer law enforcement. ask to make an appointment with a career counselor at one of the schools (not just an admissions person). they should be able to give you insight on the field beyond being a cop and may also have some other resources for you. if in Minnesota, you can try www.mnscu.edu for public colleges and universities in MN.

My sister is a dispatcher for the state patrol and seems to like it. There is a lot of camaraderie with the men and women out on the road. The downside would be working bad shifts when you first start. Lately she's been doing 2 midnights, 2 afternoons, and a day shift each week. On the upside, health benefits, vacation, and paid overtime (or extra time off) are great!

My brother is a police detective, and I rode along with him a few times when he was a street cop. Any citizen can do that if you call your local police department. I know you said you didn't want to be a cop, but you may enjoy the ride-along to talk with police officers and get an up-close look at what law enforcement really does. I learned so much, and I thought I knew what a cop's job was like because you see them all the time.

I think that most police departments still have a recruiting program and looking for new people, so I'm also assuming that means that people in the offices as well. If I were you, I'd go to your local police office and start asking questions about job positions, not neccessarily about openings, but the different types of jobs and the training/education requirements for those jobs. Talk to a cop or your local Sheriff and ask lots of questions. They will steer you in the right direction.
