I would like to know what juice brands (lower sugar, organic etc.) are best for babies. I have been buying Gerber juice but am open to other suggestions.

What can I do next?

Use whatever brand is 100% juice but mix it with water or put in ice cubes to cut down on how much she drinks. Keep introducing water though and eventually she'll drink it. My son didn't want water at first but now that's what he asks for most of the time. Good luck.

Good morning. Mott's (apple juice) makes a brand specifically for little kids. It's called "Mott's Tots". It's with the regular bottled juices. (Raley's sells it.)

Hi!
I am a Family Wellness Coach and my passion is helping new moms help their children grow into habits that will support a healthy future.

Based on my research, I have that NO JUICE is best for children. The sugar content, organic or not, is almost like a drug direct to their tiny growing brain. They are in such a stage of rapid brain growth right now, the less sugar you can put into them the better.

There are many things you can do to a cup of water that is healhtier for children.
1. Add about 1/2 tbsp of fresh lemon juice (not the kind in that plastic lemon)*if they can squeeze it in it's even better because it is like "playing with food"
2. blend an apple freeze it into icecubes and add to water.
**actually you can freeze any blended fruit and add it as ice cubes
3. Just blend ice cubes into a "slushie" format and serve with a spoon.

Be creative. You are the mother. You are setting up your children for life. You get to choose how they will live it. Will they live it with bad eating habits or good ones. You will determine their future. Everything you do today will affect them tomorrow.

Choose Wisely.

I wouldn't do juice at all. Milk and water. or water w/ a splash of juice. make sure it is 100% juice.

Gosh what a conundrum. It's hard when a child does not like water.
For me, I don't like juices given at this age.. .my kids were not given juice until after 2 years old, and then only diluted 50-50 or more. And still now.

You can try VERY diluted juice. See if your baby will take that. Or, for my son, he only likes water if there is ice in it. So try that too. Sometimes it's just the temperature. My son likes cold things. My daughter will drink anything. And my daughter also went through a 'stage' where she liked 'carbonated' water (like her Dad). So that is an option too.

Oh, or try making ice-cubes using juice... then add that to the water for your baby. That way, less sugar and give it a little taste.

Also, it's the way you serve it. Try it in a sippy cup. Or straw cup. Or maybe squeeze a little orange juice in it directly.

Is your baby drinking other things? whole milk? Formula? if so he is still getting hydrated enough.

Or like Riley said, make your own! That is the best and easy.
And yes, they need the milk fats....its an essential 'nutrient' needed for brain growth and development etc.

But going back to 'juice'... well, maybe ask your Pediatrician? Some people also like the V-8 "Splash" drinks as well.

Good luck, I know we Moms have to try so many things sometimes! LOL

All the best,
Susan

We make (ahem, squeeze) our own orange juice...but haven't gotten on board with making any other kinds. OJ is easy...everything else either requires more work or money then we're willing to do!

Other then that...we do Juicy Juice. Just juice, no added anything except vit C (ascorbic acid)& citric acid.

If you don't have a lactose intolerance going on, I'd like to STRONGLY recommend whole milk. Children's nervous systems are still growing until a minimum of age 3 and some research is showing up until age 5 or 6. (myelinization of axons/neurons). So they need a LOT of fats in their diet. Whole milk is one of the easiest and healthiest ways to go about that! :)

Hello!
Babies R Us and Whole Foods sell an organic juice called First Juice. It comes in a variety of flavors from carrot and apple, to peach and purple carrot. They are only 44% juice and the rest is water so it's already diluted for an infants needs. You can buy the in 8oz bottles with a kind of a sippy top or you can get it in a 32oz bottle.
Best,
S.

When at home, I use whatever brand I find on sale that is 100% juice (but I check that it isn't made in China - I found that some Vons brand juices are, and don't want to take my chances after all of the recent problems). For going out of the house, I found Motts for Tots juice boxes, that are already diluted! Because my toddler tends to squeeze the box and squirt it all over himself, I found juicebox holders at Babies R Us that work great! No mess (unless he tries to pull out the straw!)

Any 100% juice, mild like apple or pear, then dilute it with water is good. Try not to let your baby go to sleep with drinking juice because tooth decay can develop with teeth not even yet erupted from the gum.

I give my daughter a lot of the Fresh and Easy brand juices. They do have sugar, but not over saturated with them. I am not big on sugar intake, but I do like their juices. I have never diluted her juice because she used to have a bit of problem going to the rest room, but that has self fixed.

I get Tree Top Aple Juice (buy it at Costco - you get twice as much for the same $$) and cut it 1/2 juice & 1/2 water. I will buy any juice that is 100% juice. If you are going to go organic I suggest that you spend the money & get a juicer (I got one at Costco for $80) and make your own juice. I find that my son (18 mo.) will drink water but prefers juice. The one way that he will almost always drink water is with ice cubes in his cup. He really likes it cold especially when he is teething.

Is it terrible to suggest just offering water? We're never given our son juice except the ones we make. It's fun to make smoothies using fresh fruits and veggies for kids. There are several recipes on the site.-www.weelicious.com

Luckily all of my kids are water drinkers even my older girls will ask for water or milk when we go out to dinner. I like to shop at Henry's or trader joes, I look for no added sugar, organic, no colors etc. (as natrual as possible) but at this age deffinatly dilute it with water. I would check with your pediatrition on how much juice per day, (I know it's not very much) my son also really loves ice tea (caffine free, and without sugar) another alternive to juice. good luck

Hi!

Our pediatric dentist says "no" juice at this age. The sugar causes tooth decay. If you do use juice dilute it 50% with water. That way your baby won't get hooked on the sugar load & taste! Healthier way to give it.

I still dilute regular juice (not a special kids kind) w/ water for my son. I buy organic juice or juice made w/ all natural no sugar added no artificial color/flavor from either Trader's Joe or Fresh & Easy, then dilute 1/4 of the portion w/ water, 'cause no matter what the natural sugar from juice is not that great for kids either, also it would dilute out the citric acidic natural in juice which is harmful to the baby teeth. BTW, don't brush your kids teeth right after drinking juice, wait 30 minutes or so.

Langer's, Old Orchard apple juice, Welches grape juice and almost all orange juices are free of extra sugars and corn syrup. Call your local WIC office (or just look for the "Approved for WIC" signs by products in the store), they only approve juices with no added sugars. All juices except orange should be dilute 50/50 with water for a baby, until about age 3. The Gerber juice is just diluted regular juice. You can't dilute orange juice 50/50, it will be sour. Just experiment by tasting, how far you can go with diluting and still taste like orange juice. Most pediatricians recommend a maximum of 4 oz. of juice a day, they don't want them to fill up on juice and not get enough of the nutrients they need from thier formula and foods. Congratulations!

I would say that any juice (even store brand)is good as long as it's 100% juice. It's all the same. Some are even 120% vitamin c and that's good too. And if you want to go organic that is good too if that's the choice you make. It's really good for little bodies to not have all of those pesticides and stuff. Really it's all up to you as long as it's 100% juice. Juicy Juice was always what I used if we weren't springing for the organic stuff. My daughter loves the Naked juices now but she's 2. I figure they're good cause then they sneek veggies in too. :-)

Dear PV:
thinking about this... I'm the mother of three and grandma of two. One is 12 and the other is a mo. and a half old. I'm caring for this new one too. if my baby was one year old and could chew, I would give him or her fruit instead all cut up in pieces so small so she could chew them good. Because why give my baby processed foods when she can chew and have all natural vitamins this fruit contains.in the best interest of my children's health I alway or most always cooked and ground their food myself. and that way I skipped on food preservatives and extra salt on it. Of course I was at home at the time. I used the canned or bottled foods mostly when I had to go on errands and visits. I also used cloth diapers at home.
GERBER JUICE is an excellent choice because this company claims not to use any chemicals in their products and for safety sakes Read the labels always. My blessings to you good mamma, and keep up the good work. And GOD bless you too!
