I'm sure you and your son will be just fine. Fortunately it is just a short flight. Make sure you have snacks and drinks for him, and make sure he has something to suck on for take off and landing to help prevent his ears from hurting with the pressure change.
I've been flying with my two children to England (8 hour flight) since my eldest was just 8 weeks old and they do great.
Try not to show your son you are anxious, just concentrate on him and keeping him busy with books, toys, crayons etc.
Stay positive, it will be just fine ;)
Dear A.,
I think you will be just fine. We've done a lot of flying with our young children. They always seem interested and distracted by the new environment, and then, the noise of the plane lulls them to sleep. Be sure to have something for your son to drink. The sucking helps them with the ears on the way up and on the way down. That is usually what gets them the most. Bring some snacks to fill the time. Something interesting that he doesn't get a lot at home. If he uses a pacifier, be sure to bring a couple. They invariably get dropped or lost, so that could cause a panic. Be sure to have a big, reassuring smile on your face, and he will take your cues. Have fun! And, don't worry if he makes a bit of noise. I know some people get all impatient about it, but it is their opportunity to have their character developed a bit. :)

I am a horrible flyer too! Always have been, and sure always will be. I am ok, until we get ready to board, then my anxiety kicks in. Once i bored the plane, its on! So many emotions roll through my mind, which in turn ends up making me so stressed out, my head pounds, my body gets tense.... so this is what i have done for myself. Get meds! Last year we had to fly to CA and we had to make two stops. I asked my doc to give me something to help me relax, he gave me Xanax. I take it one hour before the flight and it really did help me to relax, i was pretty much zoned out the whole way there. But that might not be an option for you since you are taking your 16 month old. Not sure if there is an alternative for you. I guess just try and relax the best you can, i know that is hard to do when you are anxious to begin with. Good luck!
I was about to post a similar question when I read this. I, too, am an anxious flyer, going to Denver, with my 20 month old son, and am currently pregnant with #2. I normally take medication for anxiety/panic, but cannot take it while I am pregnant. I guess my advice would be to call your doctor first. I used to take klonipin before flights and it REALLY helped. I am just looking for something to do now that I am pregnant- UGH! Good Luck, enjoy it as much as possible.
I used to take Xanax or Klonopin for flying but every time I've flown with my son I've honestly been too distracted watching him to get nervous. Not that he's been terrible to fly with, mind you, but I'm so busy making sure he has his sippy cup and his toys and reading books and making sure he's not too cold or too hot... I just don't have the time.
