Hi.
My girldfriend wants me to go with her to Tampa, Florida. She is going to be visiting relatives some of the time and some of the time we will be hanging out. I don't have much interest in visiting with her relatives so I would like to go out and do things on my own, namely the beach. I have lived less than a mile from the beach here in California, however, I have yet to go in the water in those 3 years. Why? Rip currents, cold water, and huge waves at times. So I am really excited to visit a place like Florida, where I can peacefully swim with being worried of being taken away in the current or freezing. What is the beach like in October, November, and December. Is it hot in Tampa this time of year? Is it hurricane time? Also, I know its ridiculous, but are there sharks in the water, they are definitely present in San Diego, CA, so wondering what its like over there. Plus are there any must see beaches around tampa? what else is there to do in Tampa? We will be traveling with no kids..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the info. I think I may just not go to Tampa in December and wait for Spring if my girlfriend wants to go then again. If the beach is a maybe, I don't really want to spend anytime with her relatives if it means being away from my kids. I was only excited because the beach was going to be there.

I am about an hour or so north east from Tampa and the weather is still very nice that time of year, not as humid as summer but you can still swim (December gets chilly). Hurricane season ends in October so I wouldn't worry about that and last year it stayed hot and humid through December. I like Clearwater Beach (if you have a vehicle), it is nice and relaxing. You will mostly see wild dolphins and stingrays.

Tampa is a pretty big place so I am sure you will find plenty to keep you busy. Here is a website with some different options.

Busch Gardens is fun but I don't know if they are open.

I often go to Anna Maria Island, which is just about an hour south of Tampa. It is beautiful and peaceful and the farther north you go, the less people you will find. There are dolphins, but yes, there are sharks in the waters here. However, sharks typically only come in close as the sun sets.

I would never swim there in the winter. Just too cold, I don't mean it is cold but too cold to swim. Then again one year I was down there and it froze so yeah, cold.

Stingrays sometimes but no sharks.

October may not be too bad for swimming, just depends.

If you love Greek food there is a community north of there called Tarpon Springs, best food I have ever tasted.

I had family down there for years so it is hit or miss the time of year I have been down but I have been down in December and I would never have swam.

Well I live in the Jacksonville area, and Tampa runs a little hotter than we do. The water and the weather will probably be too cold to swim in, but a nice time to hang out at the beach. Just right temps that aren't too sweltering.

Of course, it has to be HOT for me to want to go swimming. That's just the way I'm built. I think San Diego actually has cooler weather than we do, so if the temps are ok there for you to go swimming at that time, you should be fine there.

Hurricane season ends in the beginning of October.

I really don't know much to do around there. I've only been once. I know Ybor City has a few dance clubs if your into that. :)

I haven't been to Tampa in many years. As far as I'm concerned, it's perfect swimming time. But then again we do swimming in the Atlantic in September. Being from LA, you may consider it too cold.

October is the end of hurricane season.

You may want to consider going to Busch Gardens. There's lots to do for all ages.
