Hi!

I'm looking to switch from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (not a fan) to either Kaiser or Cigna (I live in Colorado).

If you've had any experience with either/both of these companies I would appreciate your feedback on:

-Maternity
-General care

Thanks so much in advance for any advice!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Firstly, thanks to everyone for your responses! It's greatly appreciated.

Secondly, I'm self-employed so I'll be choosing an individual health plan. Luckily Colorado recently enacted a law that requires insurers to provide maternity, so no matter which policy I choose maternity will be somewhat covered.

Kaiser is sounding good, however my only issue with them is the 30% coinsurance which seems high to me. And since I have no idea as to what having a baby will cost, 30% a little scary. What do you think?

LOVE KAISER!!!! Just make sure you get a good family doctor and establish yourself with them, that way you don't get lost in the system. There is a system to getting what you need at Kaiser-once you know it, it works fabulous-if you don't, it can be really rough. Best wishes!!! But I have great doctors and experiences with Kaiser--- can't say enough about them---

I have Kaiser and love it! No worries about unexpected medical bills coming in the mail. It's all very simple with them. We were with another plan for several years and I felt like I talked to their reps on the phone more than my own parents! Constant billing mistakes and headaches. None of that with Kaiser.

Maternity care was great. No problems getting the tests and care I needed. I also love that they have a 24/7 advice nurse if you do have medical issues come up in the off hours. You can call and get tips on alleviating whatever problem it is or help in scheduling an appt. right away.

I love the security of knowing if I have a medical issue come up, I can get in right away. They have such a large team of doctors that if you own doctor is totally booked, they can get you in with someone else. I've been able to get in as soon as 45 minutes from the time I've called with a health issue.

Also, with pediatrics, I LOVE the weekend appointments. We didn't have this under our other plan and would have to go to urgent care. It always seems like our kids will come down with a bad illness or strange rash over the weekend and it's awesome to be able to call and get in with a doctor just like on a weekday. Our local office has Saturday and Sunday appointments for urgent issues.

if you are purchasing your own private health insurance, be careful!!!! You will most likely have to purchase a rider before you get pregnant (very expensive) to get Maternity and birth/delivery costs covered (after co-pays, deductables and the like). My private health insurance plan didn't cover any of my prenatal care or my birth and delivery costs! And after more investigation... this is quite common.

I have Kaiser and I am loving it. We had an expensive insurance before and with Kaiser we didn't pay for any maternity visits. I also had gestational diabetes and not one cent came out of pocket. We paid $300 per day at the hospital when it came time to deliver, but I have had nothing but a good experience with Kaiser.

I went from Blue Cross to Kaiser. My delivery and postpartum care were better because i had more caring staff, but that dosn't mean much because sometimes staff is just luck of the draw. I did however have immeasuably better experience with Kaiser because of the managed care. It seems that O.B., Pediatrition, Lactation consultants, and nurses were all on the same page and were more supportive of my very turbulant road to breastfeeding. I love that Kaiser has such easy access to your medical record no matter which Kaiser you are seen at or who sees you. I had a very disjointed experience outside of managed care which lead greatly to my not succeeding at breastfeeding my first child. I have really liked Kaiser though don't like how far I have to drive when I need to go to the Emergency room, and I am always sent to one quite far from my home that has a pediatric floor in case my child needs admitting. Oh well. I have nothing bad to say about the coverage of blue shield, but I don't think I ever want to be outside of managed care again. It just makes everything so seamless and I've been very happy with the competency of the Dr.s at Kaiser.

I could have been misinformed but I was told cigna was no longer offering maternity coverage as of last September. Check with your insirance agent.

Sorry I couldn't really help. I had to go on terribly expensive insurance when I lost my job because I was already pregnant. Can't wait to be done with this pregnancy mostly for that reason!

I had Cigna for the pregnancy and birth of my youngest child. I had absolutely no complaints about the insurance. I was on a 90/10 PPO through my employer. From what I recall, they paid for everything without any problems. The one thing I was always impressed about with Cigna was their customer service. I always spoke to a real person who was kind, understanding, and most importantly, knowledgeable. Plus they have a pretty decent website that allows you to review the status of claims. I used it often.

Good luck with your decision!
