Kawasaki's Disease?

We are in the hospital with 21 month old Scarlett. She has been diagnosed with incomplete Kawasaki's Disease. Yes the same that Jett Travolta had as a toddler! Incomplete because she doesn't exhibit all of the symptoms. She has ben given IVIG and is on aspirin, which is the standard treatment for this. I am thinking that maybe it is a misdiagnosis. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? She came down with a cold on Christmas night. She was doing ok with runny nose and temp. of 99 until New Year's Eve. Then the runny nose had cleared up but she spike a temp of 103. Ever since then she has had fevers up to 105 each night, lower during the day. She has puss pockets in her throat but was negative for strep. Also negative for influenza. Her eyes were very red but now are improving. She sometimes says her feet hurt and that she is itchy but there is no redness, rash or swelling. Her sed rate was 82 which is quite high, and her C-reactive protein was high too. White blood cells were high but today are normal. The doctor expected that she would be markedly improved today after her treatment with IVIG but she has started vomitting, which she wasn't doing before. I'm thinking autoimmune disease. Anyone else have any thoughts or suggestions?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your responses! We are home from the hospital now. Her echo did not show any heart vessel damage so we are lucky that it was caught and treated so early. We had other tests run which ruled out cancer as well as infections. we are awaiting the results of the autoimmune panel. For now it looks like it was Kawasaki's.

I might not be much help, but your child's symptoms sound like a lesser version of what my friend's daughter had when she was diagnosed with kawasaki's. She completely stopped crawling and fell baclward developmentally, and eventually caught up and is now a healthy four year old. She still goes in for tests once a year, I don't know if she's on any medications still but is doing great. Her mom was a medical assistant so I'm sure they just followed everything the doctor said and now she's doing fine. Do some online research and get a second opinion, stay strong! :)

I'm a mom to a wonderful 26 mos old boy and I'm not a medical professional. My son had allergies and an allergic reaction to peanuts, eggs and other things. Sometimes egg whites are used in shots and tree nuts are manufactured in so many factories that make food. It caused my son problems w/ throwing up, red rashes and him feeling itchy, red eyes, etc. You may want to just ask if it could be a combination of more than one thing. For high fever I rotated Motrin w/ Tylenol and wrote it down w/ times to make sure not to over dose. I hardly ever give medicine. Maybe she had a cold w/ an allergic reaction to food or chemicals. Have you seen her show any of these symptoms in the past or had carpets cleaned lately? When I found out about my sons allergies, I remembered eggs made him throw up and he wouldn't eat pb&j but would eat peanuts. Maybe her throat is swollen from something she ate that she's maybe allergic to. You may want a second opinion from a different doctor or check with an allergist. It's spendy for the test but will be worth it. My thoughts are with you and good luck.

The little girl I babysit was thought to have Kawasaki's aroung age 5-6mo. turns out it was a compo of teething and a bad double ear infection that was treated with the powerful antibiotics. from what I learned when they thought she had this.. Super hard to diagnose and has so many symptoms of a "regular" cold.
if her sed rate and CRP are high.. a 2nd opinion may be needed.. and I would look into the allergy idea the other mom recomended. the itcy feet is interesting.
Good Luck and remember to trust your "mommy instinct"

If you are unsure I would ask for a second opinion. There are several autoimmune diseases. My son has one and he gets sore joints, fevers, runny nose, red eyes with discharge, puffy eyes(all the time), really dry skin and cradle cap. When he was first hospitalized his sed rate and white blood counts were also high. We ended up going to Seattle childrens hospital to see a autoimmune specialist who diagnosed him with RA. I don't know anything about Kawasaki's, so I don't know what the symptoms of that would be. Don't be afraid to ask for that seconds opinion, I flew all the way to Seattle to get mine!
