Keeping Baby Out of Cat Food

My 9 mo. old has taken a keen interest in the cat food. He doesn't eat any of it (that I have witnessed), but loves to play with it and put it into the kitty's water. This is having an effect on our cat, who no longer wants to go there to eat. I will put it up from time to time to keep him out of it, but then I will forget to put it back down again. Any creative ideas that have worked for others dealing with this?

Hi L.,

I was helping babysit a cat and they have their cat's food and drink on the picture window in the livingroom.

Thought it was the weirdest spot, but it worked for them! ;-) The cat waited for me to put the dish in place and went right to it and ate!

We put ours up on the counter where the cat could get it but my kids couldn't. Also once they got older I put it near my back door where it wasn't out in the open. Now it's back in our kitchen.

Many of the people I know with cats feed them on top of the refrigerator.

We put it up where our cats can jump up to and our little one could not reach. Now around 3 years of age we can keep the food down, she knows not to eat it... the water is a different story, she loves playing in it so that we still keep up where the cat can jump up to and she can not reach.

We have a cat closet in our house. We just cut a hole in one of our closet doors (in our office) and put the cats food, water and litter in there. We have a little kitty door flap on it so it looks better and then we just just replace the door ($30) when we move.
