Keeping Hardwood Floors CLEAN - Clearwater,FL

I have hardwood throughout my place, except in the kitchen and bath have tile. I use Bona floor cleaner every 3 days but on the days I don't my little baby girls feet and knees get soooo dirty from playing and crawling. It's making me crazy! Is there someway, aside from walking on the floors, to keep them cleaner? Or should I just mop everyday? I do have area rugs in my living room and one under my dining room table. TIA

I have hard wood floors and I just sweep daily (sometimes twice a day) and I have the shark steam mop that I use once a week. My floors stay pretty clean. We also don't wear shoes in the house

You can't stop dirt, but taking your shoes off as soon as you walk in the door helps a LOT with keeping dirt from tracking everywhere.

I never cleaned my wood floors more than once a week, sometimes less often, and that was with 3 kids, 2 dogs and a cat. When I did I only used a small amount of Murphy's wood oil soap diluted with warm water.
Using too much cleaner too often builds up residue which attracts dirt/dust, I imagine that's what going on. Also we never wear our shoes around the house, that makes a BIG difference too.

M.:

My hardwoods get washed once per week.

You might have mopped the varnish/sealant (finish) off from mopping so frequently with an astringent cleaner...when my kids were crawling (well, darn they are 10 and 12 and still crawl, jump, skid, etc.) all over our floors!!! :) I would mop once per week and dry dust every day (we had a shedding dog).

Stop cleaning them every other day. Use a dry duster to pick up dust and dirt - other than that? Once a week is fine. I would not stress over the "dirt"...it's hard to answer this question as everyone has a difference tolerance and acceptance for "dirty" and "clean". Dirt happens - so I don't stress over it. Mud. Nope.

Good luck!! I hope you find the balance!

I have harwood. I sweep with a broom daily and wash weekly (or even less often), just as needed. The kids are only allowed to eat at the table, and spills get cleaned up right away. My floors don't get that dirty. Are you wearing outdoor shoes in the house? We take off our shoes at the door and put on slippers in the house. I wouldn't mop every day or every third day, as I can't imagine that would be very good for the floors at all. I would sooner wash the baby.

We have hardwoods and the floors don't get this dirty.
Is the cleaner an oil-based one? That could actually be causing some of the problem. It gives a great shine, but can also attract the stuff you don't want.

Here are a few things which we do:
First, I never use a cleaning product on our hardwoods.
Take off shoes upon entering/wear houseslippers. (I don't, but I am the one who cleans the floor.:) Still, not a lot of problems with this.)

I sweep. A Lot. Okay, probably twice a week. Otherwise, I vacuum the floor once a week, to get all the extra cat hair and dust bunnies. I have to use an attachment w/ hose to do it, otherwise the dust just gets moved around if we use the regular vac (we have a Kirby, so we remove the front brush part and put on the hose). I do the rugs after I do the hardwoods.

I do not mop at all. Hate it. I just spot clean or use warm water and a well-wrung out cloth once in a very blue moon. Our floor does not look dirty at all. The dirt does not get on clothes, even when Kiddo was a crawler.

Just use a Swiffer dry dust mop everyday.
Bona once a week.
We have hardwood floors and 2 kids.
That is what I do and its fine.

Or, do you all wear shoes in the house?
Here in Hawaii, no one wears shoes in the house.
It makes the interior floors & carpet, dirty.

Shoes should come off at the door, and stocking feet or slippers only. I dont practice this but my DIL does and it really does work wonders for keeping your floor clean. People will get used to the fact that they cant wear their shoes in the house if you put it into action. It also stops people from running in and out all day since they have to stop and take their shoes off :)

I vacuum my hardwood floors 2x a week. I dry swiffer them, too !

We take off our shoes !

I clean the floors w/ a non-toxic Method hardwood floor cleaner every other week. I try not to damp mop the wood often. I was told not to by several people ! Sometimes, I wash them only once a month.

Dry swiffer pads are great! I turn them over and use the other side , too !!!! You can use them every day !

get a big dust mop from somewhere like lowes or ace hardware (like janitors in the schools use, well maybe not that big, but you get the picture) and pass it every night before bed;)

I find that I sometimes have to wash the floors twice a week--I have a messy eater, but mostly the floors are clean because we don't wear shoes in the house.

I hand wash with vinegar and water, and then I use a steam mop as needed.s
