Keeping Little Fingers Out of Dresser Drawers

I relocated my PlayStation into my room when we got a new tv for the living room. My daughter likes to come in our room and watch. She keeps herself content playing between our room, and the living room, most times.... Lately, she has been opening her dresser drawers and pulling her clean clothes out! I scold her for doing it, but my attempts have been useless thus far. Any suggestions for how to secure that dresser drawers so that she can't get into them?

What can I do next?

Yes..I agree it is a phase & it will pass but I felt compelled to mention the issue of childproofing the television and dressers so that they will not tip over on her should she decide to climb! Please remember to take the time to secure your dressers and televisions to the wall with a childproofing safety device!

My duaghter is about the age where she is doing the same thing. I have a few different things. I got all of them at Walmart for pretty cheap. I have a sliding lock that works great for double doors, like on kitchen cabinets. I also have drawer locks where you pull out the drawer a little and press down on the piece to open it. There are a few spots in my house where neither of these work and I have been using rubber bands wrapped tightly to keep the doors closed. There are lots of things out there so hopefulyl you can find one that will fit on your drawers!

Why not try some of the drawer guards typically used for kitchen drawers. If she can't open the drawers, she can't dump them.

Good luck.

sounds like you are doing well raising your daughter. i would go to walmart to buy devices for any type of drawers or cabinets to child proof them. this will let drawers open so far without her getting into them. this is especially important with household cleaners.

Hi A.;

the best thing I can think of is to make her help you pick up and fold and put back the clothes ever single time she does it .... she will get tired of it after a couple times... just be firm and consistent...

good luck,
S.

I found latches that have adhesive bases and a strap to keep drawers shut. I used them on laminate furniture and the refrigerator door. The might mar wood or painted surfaces. They are similar to the ones on this website

First of all, let me tell you how impressed I am that you're raising a daughter by yourself at 19. I wish you the best of luck and LOTS of patience in the upcoming years with your schoolwork and motherhood. In response to your question, the first thing you have to remember is that toddlers love to get into EVERYTHING, and you have to learn how to pick your battles. If this is a major problem for you, I'd suggest safety locks like you would use for kitchen cabinets. There are a lot of different types depending on your preferences and your particular drawer pulls. What I've used in my house for 7 1/2 years now (my youngest is 2 and is the worst one of the 3) are called Tot Locks. They're a little difficult to put in, but are baby/toddler proof. They're magnetic locks that only open with a special magnet key. No matter how hard you try, even an adult can't pull the drawers open. The only thing that you would have to consider is the height of your drawers. You don't want your daughter pulling so hard that she may topple a dresser on top of her.
I wish you the best of luck.

Might I suggest just simply removing the dresser from the room. Move it into your room or the bathroom maybe a closet, Places that she cant go unless you are there. If you allow her into the bathroom or your room sipmly close the door and put a handle cover over it. This way you will have to be there for her to get in. Then you dont have to worry about screws or anything that might damage the dresser. Also if you do latch the drawers you still have to worry about her tugging so hard that the dresser might fall over. Good luck and I hope this helps.

This phase is actually too short for me to suggest ruining your furniture with latches that screw into place! I would just put something large in front of the drawers when she is playing near them. The other option is to put her toys inside the drawers and the clothes in the closet or into a plastic bin with a lid until she outgrows this phase. Believe me...your house is not the same after a child comes into it! I have found that instead of burdening yourself scolding them for being curious, it is much easier to just alter your household set-up temporarily.

Well, A., a lot of childproofing depends on the furniture. You can buy latches to screw into drawers and keep them secure. I have found if it has nobs or handles, I can tie a jump rope or string around the nobs or through the handles and that is a cheap way to keep them closed. I would suggest visiting a Toys R Us store and look around. Even if you can't afford what they sell, you may get a good idea from it. And of course, garage sale season is coming, there is usually a lot of kid/parent stuff available at those places. Good luck.

put safety guards on your drawers. I have them all through my kitchen. I didn't have them on their drawers and sure enough when i was a few feet away and turned my back, my lil one (who pulled the clothes out all the time) tried to climb up the dresser & pulled it , the tv and cable box over on top of her!!! Thank god she was fine with only a fat lip. You can even find them at the dollar store.

I have a friend with rats, I sold jewelry for 13 years & took a jewelry repair class too!! Good luck!
