"Kid Care" Insurance - Which Is Best in Central Florida for Special Needs Child?

I am hoping someone can help advise what is the best "Kid Care" plan to choose for Central Florida. Right now I have narrowed it down to United and Staywell. My little one has a rare inborn metabolic error which presents much like hypotonic CP. Due to this he needs regular PT/OT and tests such as Sedated MRI's every year/two years, skeletal X-Rays, blood test, etc. He currently is 29 weeks but can only sit supported, can roll over but cannot sit unsupported, crawl or weight bear on his legs for more than 5 seconds. We have already utilized all the PT/OT/Speech on my company issuance and need to make a decision soon.

I have heard Staywell only approves a certain amount of PT/OT for life; which will not work. That being said I have heard United and Amerigroup are difficult to work with and get test approved. I am looking for feed back on anyone who might be able to provide some guidance.

Update: We have applied for Medicaid but we are over income and were placed on the medical needy "share of cost" program of $1900 monthly. This is not something we can afford to pay out of pocket. I am trying to get in touch with his PT/OT but not response yet.

What can I do next?

If your child is disabled? Why not call the Occupational therapists that you are currently working with to find out which insurance works best with them?

CP - is Cerebral Palsy - that's a lifelong disability. Why have you not considered medicare? While MANY people can overcome and thrive, with low muscle tone and control - it's a tough disease.

I would talk to the places you are taking your almost 7 month old son to and ask them which insurance works best for them.

You might want to talk to the billing people at your physical therapy provider. They may be able to tell you the pros and cons of all insurances you are eligible for. If you can keep your company insurance and use the "kid care" plan as a supplement, it may give you more options. in some medical cases you can keep your company ins and get the the kid care too.
Good luck!

If this is a life long disability that he will never get over then you might be able to apply for medicare/medicaid for him. Then his medical needs could be covered better.

I can't imagine how hard this is for you.

Talk to your pediatrician about getting a referral to Children's Medical Services. It's part of the Florida Department of Health. I used to work for them when I lived in Florida. They have nurses as Care Coordination Specialists and people to help you navigate "Kid Care". They will be able to coordinate care for you and if you qualify for "Kid Care" they will be able to tell you which plan will work best for you. They also coordinate specialists, PT, OT, the purchase and delivery of DME and just about anything else you will be needing to care for your little one.
