Hey ladies! I'm trying to plan a winter get-a-way for the family and am looking for suggestions/advice/experience for kid friendly places in Mexico. I'm wondering if anyone out there has been to Playa del Carmen and if so how was it? Was it kid friendly? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for a spot in Mexico that was particularly kid friendly and would go back? Also, any really bad experiences or suggestions of where to absolutely not go would be useful as well. I have two daughters, 5 & 3 1/2. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and advice.
A.

My kids are older, 8 and 11, but we took them to Puerto Vallarta last year when they were 7 and 10. It's not generally considered a huge family destination, but it worked out very well for us. We stayed in an older person's condominium with my parents, but I've heard from other families who have been there that they have some wonderful family all-inclusive resorts there. There is a Marriott near the airport with a lot of family activities and a newer resort on the complete opposite end of town where a family I know stayed with kids ages 2-9. Kids as young as 5 can swim with the dolphins in Nuevo Vallarta and I think they have a canopy program for younger children too. We did both of those. We played on the beach and swam in the pool. There is also a water park outside of town; we didn't go there. Warning--the surf is strong there so we didn't actually swim in the ocean--we played on the beach and waded in the ocean. We like PV because it is a real town and not just a resort area. We like going into town to have dinner, shop and/or walk around on the cobblestone streets. There is an area along the river where they have a market and street performers every night. It was wonderful to watch the kids explore another culture. Another warning--car seats are not really practical and many of the taxis don't even have working seat belts in Mexico generally. There is a large modern supermarket near the old part of the hotel/resort strip in PV that is like shopping in a Super Target. We prepared most of our own breakfasts and lunches from food purchased there and I bought all of our beach and sand toys there and then left them with some Mexican children. Pretty much anything you need or may have forgotten you can find at that store. I still miss their bakery, deli cheeses and fresh-squeezed orange juice! Good luck and have fun wherever you end up.

Hi A.,

I haven't traveled to Mexico with my kids, BUT I did visit as a single person 4 years in a row to Akumal and I would recommend it as a good destination for a family. There were a lot of families there each time that I visited. It is just south of Playa del Carmen. It has a very resort-y feel, and very community orientated. There is a grocery store, and very family friendly restaurants. I felt very comfortable eating the food at all the places we visited. Here are two links to the community websites that lists condo's etc. and also some of the family activities you can do.

I haven't taken my son to Mexico yet, but last December we went to Montego Bay, Jamaica. While I have heard that I shouldn't take him off of the resort, we had a blast there!! We stayed at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort. We got an AWESOME deal! It's about a 10 minute drive from the airport via taxi and it is very kid friendly. Great pools, jungle gym, amazing beach, icecream and popcorn stand, glass bottom boat, fun activities planned, daycare, baby sitters, and my son's favorite - a buffet. It is an all inclusive resort and this buffet had anything a kid would LOVE - Pizza, pasta, pancakes, macaroni, fresh fruit, salads, and lots of Jamaican specialties too. There are a lot of fun restaurants on the resort and we would have him eat FIRST at the buffet and then drop him off at the daycare while we went to eat somewhere a little nicer. It worked out great! One thing about this resort - it's not the FANCIEST place, but it is well maintained, clean, comfortable and the staff is awesome! They were all very cool! So, good luck! Have fun in the sun!

My partner and I have a time share in Mexico in Nuevo Vallarta at the Grand/Club Marival. I know that there are lots of activities and stuff there for kids. I believe they also have a large kids pool with fun stuff in it. If you want to check out their website go to: www.gomarival.com
There are great pools with swim up bars for the parents and fun stuff at night as well. They do allow vendors to sell on the beach too. I love it there...it is right on the beach and the ocean is beautiful.

Good luck!

I was in Playa del Carmen for a mom's getaway trip this past August and it has a great laid back atmosphere that is definately welcoming for families. My friends and I stayed at a condo next to the long line of hotels along the main beach and there were kids of all ages every each spot along the beach. Restaurants were reasonably priced (especially a little hole-in-the-wall/but friendly place - Dr. Taco) and contain kid-friendly choices. I'd vote for Playa; just be aware that it is a 1 1/2 hr van/car if you fly into the Cancun airport.
