Kiddie Pool Cleanliness

I would like to avoid constantly refilling the kiddie pool in the back yard. Does anybody have some suggestions on how to keep the pool as clean as possible? Should I add chlorine? If so, how much? I also don't want to have a West Nile Virus mosquito pool in my back yard, y'know what I mean? ;) (BTW, my kid is potty trained and I would ALWAYS change the water if she peed in it.)

What can I do next?

I know that working in childcare centers we had to use a cap full of bleach to one pool...not a huge pool but your typical size kiddie pool!

Honestly, I would not leave the pool out. If a kid wanders into your yard and drowns in the pool, you will be liable (unless it is in a locked, fenced area). It is not worth the risk of being sued. I know it is a real pain (trust me!) but I would not do it. They actually have ordinances where I live that prohibit this.

I know it's a hassle, but it would be safer to empty it after each use for your child's safety and any younger neighborhood kids. Kids drown in those types of pools, too, not just the regular kind of pools, and not necessarily because the parent was negligent by not watching his or her child. All it takes is a child to slip and fall and/or bump his/her head. I have a kiddie pool, myself and have to pay the water each time I fill it. But I won't keep it filled because I have 3 younger kids and have neighborhood kids that might be at risk of drowning.

I looked this up last summer because I didn't want to keep dumping it. I can't remember the measurement but the consensus was a little bleach in it. I tried covering it, but that actually made it get algae-ish even faster. I would personally ask my doctor about using bleach in it and see what they say. I know doctors will sometimes say bleach in bathwater for eczema is safe, so it might be okay. That was my plan, but my pool popped and I gave up on the whole thing :)

I put a couple sheets over it when we are not in. That keeps it covered from bugs grass ect... but still allows air to move through so it doesn't get moldy. It helps to make the shets are a bit damp when putting on so they stay in place. However I still only keep the water in about 4 days. So we refill it on monday and drain and dry it on the weekend.

Frankly, pees isn't too much of a worry, it does come from a sterile place. poop would be a concern :)

I would be wary of putting in chlorine...when you figure a jug of pool rated chlorine is used for a huge swimming pool. It isn't worth the risk of burning sensative skin :)

Stuff will get into the kiddy pool whether it is tread in, blown in, or flown in. If your child does NOT have access to it, you could cover it with a tarp. This makes me uncomfortable because I know little ones have a way of finding their way to water. However, you know your environment better that I ;)

Quite frankly, if you are keeping the kiddy pool in a sunny location, just dump it and refill it as needed. If you fill it in the morning, it should be ready by afternoon with sunlight, depending on the size of the kiddy pool.

I put bleach in the water everytime I fill it along with a little bit of baking soda. It keeps the water "clean" from bacteria and keeps alge from growing. Honestly, the amount of times my kids get in and out the water it gets so dirty that I have to change the water about every 2-3 days anyway.
Enjoy your summer and your daughter!

might sound crazy.. but some people add a little bleach each night.. like 1/4 cup... not a lot... ask you dr. to make sure.... or look up on the internet..

If it's a small pool, just empty it and change the water...

Last year we had a big blow up pool and I used a cup of bleach in it every other day and changed the water only every 4 days or so.

Unless you have a filtration system set up, the water just gets nasty with "stuff" kids track in anyways...
Have fun!
