J.,

Just plan on packing her lunches and snacks. Ask her teacher if she can give you a heads up when birthdays and special treat days are so you can send something special that day for her.

I have to deal with food alergies also that trigger my asthma so i know what a pain this is. I have been doing a lot of studing on my own but also working with my doctor about natural alternitaves. I am not sure what you are dealing with but you might want to consider a couple of books to look at. Allergies are linked to a lot of other thngs in our body. Try looking at "90 Day Immune System Makeover" by Dr Janet Maccaro. Also look at "The Complete Guide to Candidas" I think that was the name. If you stop by one of the Vitiman Cottages and ask them about Candidas they can give you all kinds of info.

Take care and feel free to email me if you have any questions.

PS-I went through the Adams County schools also. Good system. I just wont say how LONG ago it was. lol

My daughter has severe allergies to all tree nuts. She was diagnosed when she was 2 and is not 10 years old. She has been in Adams County schools since she began school. I recommend you contact the district nurse. They will have you fill out the appropriate forms for the medications to have on hand. Also inform all office and faculty in contact with your daughter. Last get a allergy bracelet or medical tag she can wear. Hope this helps.

Make sure the school is aware of the fact she has food allergies. You will need to pack a lunch for her everyday. Party days and birthday treats will be hard for her as most parents don't take into consideration that other children have food allergies unless their kids suffer from them.

Just make sure the school and her teacher know about the food allergies!

I would say when you register your child most schools have a form for children with allergies and a health form from your DR's office. These are all in their file and the teachers are notified. Luckily in my daughter's ECE class there is only one child allergic to gluten and her mom brings her gluten free snacks. Teachers are always made aware and you can certainly also inform them. I usually asked before I brought snacks for the whole class if someone was allergic to something.

I sat down & talked to my sons teachers 1:1 each one. I told the other parents & find some are inconsiderate, like his lunch partners mom, still sends him with peanut butter sandwichs .....people don't understand.
But the teachers watch for this, my son has asked people since he was 3 does it have nuts? does it have milk? (pretty funny if they are handing him grape juice) he knows. He has snacks in his backpack, I send treats when its another birthday and give his teachers a box with things he can have in it.
He knows how to do his epi pen, & they have an epi pen trainer which I gave to the school to have teachers practice with it, he knows his presymptoms, but for us the biggest help was getting hooked up with National Jewish for his asthma & allergies, they treat him & all the things as if its normal, they have us in & out of triage in an hour, not 5 or 6 like other hospitals & the specialize in allergies & asthma. (& the don't treat me like I am crazy-a serious added plus)

Hi J.,
My son is allergic to eggs and peanuts so I have some feedback. I would suggest you make sure you talk to your daughters teacher directly and let her know what allergies she has. I would also make sure that a letter goes out to all the parents letting them know there is someone in the class with allergies. Parents whose kids don't have allergies tend to forget and bring things to class that could be harmful to kids with allergies. I don't know how old your daughter is, but try to teach her what she can and cannot eat so that if someone brings "bad" food to class, she will know not to eat it. I think educating your daughter and the people around her is very important. Hope this helps.

My grandson also has very serious food allergies and will start school next August. He is allergic to everything but cockroaches and cats, even watermelon and especially anything with corn in it. My daughter has walked him through everything he can and can't have and believe it or not, he always reminds me when I am preparing something that he shouldn't eat. Right now he is in daycare and they are very good about giving the right snacks and so on. A note to the teacher and school nurse is a must when he starts school.

J.,
I think everyone has given you great ideas. My daughter has a severe allergy to Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Seeds and Dogs. I was so worried about her attending Kindergarten this year. I made sure that I talked personally with the school nurse and her teacher. I wanted to make sure that they know how to administer a Epi-pen that needs to be near her at all times. It’s also important that you make sure that your daughter is aware of her allergy.

On the first day I packed a small size Rubbermaid/Tupperware container labeled with her name, allergy, name & phone number of Doctor and other emergency numbers. In the container I have things like skittles (they use M&M's a lot), treats for celebrating B-Day and other small treats/snacks. When her class works with items containing/manufactured with allergy items her teacher uses these things. I always try to make school parties; Halloween and Valentines Day are the worst for allergy-tainted foods.

I hope these ideas help. It is a stressful situation but the teachers are well trained and know exactly what to do. Good luck! (Arapahoe Ridge Elementary School Mother)
