Kindergarten? - Rockville,MD

My son is about to start kindergarten, and I'm not sure what to expect. Do they come home with homework at this age? Does he need a backpack, pencil case? Do they have workbooks at this age? What supplies did you get to prepare for Kindergarten? Anything you didn't realize at first was necessary, but found out as time went on? I know its a broad question, but he's my only child and I have no idea really what it's going to be like.

The school should have a supply list. Backpack at minimum. My kids both had homework in kindergarten. Good luck. And dont cry too much the first day.

get the school list from your school website. He will need to provide certain things for use in the class room like glue sticks, crayons, pencils, ect. In my school he would also need a backpack to bring work home in, a pair of gym shoes to leave at the school, and snacks for the class about once a month. Get your school list, and than talk with his new teacher about what is needed/wanted for the room.

My daughter just did Kindergarten last year. They sent home a school supply list a few weeks before school starts. Her supply was to bring a glue stick. Call the school and find out what he needs. I'm surprised that nothing has been sent to you. They do need a backpack. A lot of things are sent home each day. She did have homework, but it was very minimal. She took home one worksheet a week, and they had all week to work on it, but it could all be easily finished in 10 minutes.

Definitely go on the school website- and they should also have a "meet the teacher" day with a list of supplies/wish list for teachers.. for Kinder you will most likely need- pencils, fiskar scissors, erasers, definitely crayons, maybe a composition book..bookbag..pencil case.. markers.. at least that is what my son used last yr and my daughter the year before. Homework- probably not the first week but definitely after that. Most if not all K's dont even have nap time.. maybe 'center/circle' time for half hour ..

I would call the school and ask. Sometimes, even if the school has a website, it is not properly updated. The list for my 7th graders online does not match what they sent home at the end of last year. When they were in kindergarten, they had to have a backback that could hold a regular sized folder--no little cutesy ones but not too large they could not walk either. The folder was sent home with items for home like school events and notes and homework to be sent back. One thing I have learned is that when you buy school supplies, crayons are always on that list. Buy extras. They disappear very quickly and the price triples in my area after school startes. My kids have never had a communal bowl that crayons were put in like I have read other moms mention in other posts.

HI! You should check your schools website. They will have a list of what you will need to buy and bring to school on his first day. He will definately need a backpack. Most schools do not allow the ones with rollers. I am sure he will get homework, how much will depend on teachers. This is going to be a big day for him! Good Luck in the school year!!! We buy those $1 workbooks at Five Below, which helps my daughter alot. I use those all throught the summer and throughout the school year. She is in PreK this year, but we also did them in preschool last year. Good Luck!

As others have said, there should be a school supply list if he needs anything for school.
My daughter came home with homework once a week in Kindergarten, but I'm sure all schools vary.

For homework at home, we needed pencils, crayons, scissors & glue to do some of the assignments. So if anything you might to keep those on hand.

your school should have supplied you with a supply list of what was/is needed.

They should have already had an open house or something to introduce the teacher and children...if not - call the school and find out.

Communicate with the school...they have dealt with PLENTY of "first timers"!! :)

GOOD LUCK!!
