Recent conversation has sparked an interest in the new trend of Kindergarten consulting. It seems more and more parents of preschool children are hiring professionals to help them decide where and when their child should attend kindergarten. I was wondering if there was anyone who had any experiences with Kindergarten consultants and, if so, what their experience was? Thanks!

There is a great book out called Einstein Never Used Flash Cards. By Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, Ph.D. and Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D. I must say this is one of the best books that anyone can read when it comes to child development. I would advise any mom to read this book.

Hi K.,
I personally think it's ridiculous to hire somebody else to tell you whether your child is ready for kindergarten. You know better than anyone else. I have a 14 year old stepdaughter and a 15 year old daughter. It was very obvious that my daughter was ready. She is now in 9th grade and a straight A student. My step daughter, on the other hand, was held back in first grade. She is now in 8th grade and has an IEP to help her learn. When I was going to school, there was no kindergarten and I turned out fine. I just think if you pay attention and work with your kids, you will know. Good luck.

I think as a parent we know if our child is ready and they will be assessed to see if they are ready. But where will our child suceed to their maximum extent? This is a hard question. I have never heard of hiring someone, but this would be great. I think i found my future career! I have been looking into preschools and it is very hard. I would check out all the possible schools available to you, most schools are good about letting parents come and watch. And look at the children, see how they are learning, how they interact and how the teachers are that is a good first step. If the child has a good parent as conserned as you are they are going to do well. And if the school is not providing what your child needs, talk with them and if you get no results change or take other action.

I've NEVER heard of it. Isn't a mom the best consultant around?

Wow--

I've never heard of that but I know it's a big issue around here. I have three summer boys so it is always an issue. I would have long in depth discussions with your preschool teachers. Also, you can talk to the kindergarten and have them screened early etc. I, personally say don't hold them back unless there is a real reason, but I do know that many many people do it and are happy about it. go with your gut.

K.,
When my daughter was in preschool she was 5 yrs old. she didnt get into kindergarten until she was almost 6 becasue of when her birthday was. I has asked the preschool teachers and they said she was definatly ready. I have never heard of consultants before...you know if your child is ready or not. They also do the screening for kindergarten at the school also. Good luck with everything.
