I am so frustrated--My child is in OT & having such a difficult time in Kindergarten. The checks & balance system with her mainstream private school is failing. I don't know what to do next!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The information I received from other mothers through this website has been priceless. Can you believe my child is doing absolutely amazing at her new 1/2 day public school (Ogden) which is free & right across the street from us! The school has been so caring, the teacher has been amazing & feels my child has been a "cake walk" and didn't treat anything like it was the end of the world. My daughter knows that they do math there but the teacher turns it into a game. She is so positive. My child has received the highest behavior ratings on a daily basis. The teacher takes extra time to make my child feel extra special. She has 2 classmates in our building with nice parents who have offered to help out in a pinch. What a turn around. She is still in her private OT. Thanks everyone so much.

I have absolutely no experience in this area, but I work at Chicago Public Schools (in finance). I have no idea what is available, but you could try calling our Office of Specialized Services ###-###-####) to inquire as to what options are available in the public schools. Hope you are able to find a solution that works!

My son has sensory integration disorder and started OT last year in Kindergarten. A supportive teacher and the structure of public school kindergarten was really good for him. I'm sorry your child's year is starting out so stressfully. Does the teacher seem supportive and understanding? Have you observed in the classroom to try to figure out what might be triggering problems? Does the OT have any suggestions? It sounds like maybe you are considering a change of schools - I know some people with special needs kids find private schools won't take the trouble to accommodate them, while other people have great luck. If the school isn't being supportive, I'd definitely consider a change. We learned from experience that teacher and environment make a huge difference for kids who are sensitive to the environment.

I'm sure others have suggested finding a suburban school. They take public funds and are required to treat and assist special needs children. Private schools really have no interest in accomodating "special needs", as what they value is the "acceptance rate" at top notch magnet schools and other private schools. Sorry, I'm in the same boat

Hi R.. I am sorry to hear that your child is having difficulty in school right now. How often is he or she receiving OT? What are your child's sensorsy issues and how are they being addressed in the classroom? You might consider private OT at a center if you don't feel your child's needs are being met in the school. There are two such clinics in Oak Park-- Rigdeland Therapeutics and Kids Unlimited. Have you spoken to the teacher and if so, how are they helping to accomodate your child?
I hope things get better soon.
