So my 5 year old just started kindergarten today and came home with homework today after school my question is this when is a good time to get the homework done. I am very routine for him and always have been and of course want to make this part of our routine now but when is a good time to do it?

What can I do next?

A.,
My kinder hasn't brought home any homework yet, but what I have always done with his older brother from the beginning is to give him a snack and once the snack is done, we sit down and do it together.

This has worked for us for over 4yrs and I find it rewarding for our child. Once the homework is done then it is free time. (Play, watch TV, movie, etc.) Giving an incentive or reward for a job done is a great motivator especally for our oldest.

Good luck.

I always had my kids do theirs while I was doing the dishes. I could always stop and help them when they needed it. When I was in college I would place my books on the table at the same time. If my kids did not have any homework they had to get a book to read during homework time. I would put some music on with the column on low.
I had set this schedule for home work because when I would start working they would be in day care, or after school activities (for K-5th grade)
I am hoping to do the same homework routine with my youngest, he starts pre-school this week.
My older kids now are a legal assistant (working on be an attorney), a teacher, machinist, and electronic engineer, photographer.
Be evolved with his school, volunteer.
I hope this helps

Hi A.,
I'm a fourth grade teacher and I would highly recommend beginning an after school homework routine with your little guy. As he gets older he'll only become more active and involved in more and more after school activities. That takes up all your evening time and just some "mom and me time" with him. Since most activities don't begin until later, if he is used to always doing his work right after school each day, not having time for homework at the end of the night really shouldn't be an issue. What a great example you'll set for him and get him in the right track for success. His future teachers will appreciate it too!

What we do is have a snack when they get home and talk about their day. Then about 30 mins later we start homework.

I like doing it sooner than later. Have a snack when he comes home and have homework time right after. Then it's done and before he's involved in some other activity that you might have to tear him away from if you scheduled it for later.

My daughter loves homework. She does it right after school to get it out of the way, so the night won't be full of worries or even the weekend if she doesn't have to turn it in until next week. We always got it done right away, but there were a few times we were last minute. Don't dispair, we have to be flexible at this age. Good luck.

I think that right after school, after a snack and say 30 minutes of down time is a good time to do homework. If we put it off something always comes up and it doesn't get done.

I have heard of other families having better success doing it right before or after dinner or even in the morning before, during, or after breakdfast.

The best time to do homework is the time that works best for you. Once you know when that time is stick to it so that you are forming a routine. Without a routine homework frequently doesn't get done. I speak from experience.
