Kindergarten Snack Time....

My daughter has morning snack time every day in Kindergarten. She gets 1 item and it cannot be refridgerated. Here is what I've got in mind or already sent in the past week....

Bananas
Cereal in a baggie
Applesauce/spoon
Bugles
Goldfish
Oreos sticks with cream
Chip like snacks
Cookie like snacks

What else could I be putting in her bag? I was thinking of pudding or the non refridgerated jello but I would like her snack to keep her satisifed until lunch...which is why I hesitate to give her a fruit snack like she wants! LOL

She's picky on her fruits, so I guess I could give her cantaloupe, but sometimes she doesn't like it. THe other fruits, she likes the skin cut off (pears, apples) so those are out *unless I cut them and put lemon juice on them so they don't turn brown*

Just wondering if I'm missing any great 'healthy' snacks? She doesn't like raisins, dried fruit, they can't have PB.....

What do you provide for your Kindergartener?

So What Happened?

Thanks so far and keep the ideas coming!! I didn't even think about cheese - guess I thought it shouldn't sit out for a few hours but if you mamas have tried it out and it worked, then I'll definitely try it!!!

Also thanks for the comment on the pudding - i was thinking it would be messy! This is why I love Mamapedia!

Also wanted to add that I did ask her and that is the list of things I put in my Question area. If it were up to her, she'd have yogurt (which she can't have), Bugles or fruit snacks or marshmallows every day!

Have you asked her? I send my kids the same snack everyday...when they get tired of it...then I send something new.

My son takes a whole apple everyday...one in his lunch and one for his snack...he loves apples and will eat them off the core. This morning he told me he wanted popcorn...so I popped him some and put it in a bag and off he went...he may now be on a popcorn kick for months.

My daughter takes applesauce and a piece of fruit leather. The fruit leather is not "fruit snacks"...but only fruit in it no chemicals or HFCS. The applesauce is only apples as well...no extra sugar or fillers.

If you find a snack she will eat...keep sending it until she wants a change...but my kids both like knowing it is going to be the same everyday.

They make containers now that have an ice pack built in and it snaps into the lid. You can put different items inside it and send that. Last year I would usually send dry foods for my daughters snack, but since they had it so early I started sending cold items too. Most stuff will be OK for a few hours. I would send whatever my daughter ate at home, fruits, crackers & cheese, etc.

Some of the things DD likes are:

granola bars
pretzels
crackers
applesauce packets - you just unscrew the cap and suck it out
strawberries
Teddy Grahams
Graham Crackers
different flavors of Frosted Shredded Mini Wheats
animal crackers

Also, they make containers that have sides that are filled with gel that you can freeze and put something like yogurt or cut up fruit inside. DD has snack in the afternoon so that won't really work for us, but it should be fine if she has her snack in the morning.

As someone else mentioned, you could make a special trail/snack mix. You can put in different cereals, pretzels, chocolate chips and even a few fruit snacks.

The hard part is when some kid in your child's class brings candy for snack. DD has come home telling me that another kid had Skittles for a snack one day and started asking for them. I had to explain to DD that they are supposed to have a healthy snack and candy isn't healthy and that it's not a snack - it's a special treat.

Our daughter loves Fig Newtons...

Our district has an approved snack list...snacks are "encouraged" (i.e. nice way of stating required). They have cheez-its, fig newtons, applesauce, cheese.

We also buy the pre-packaged apples. I leave them in the bag but put them in a plastic container that has an ice pack in them, there is sandwich ones that the ice pack has a "lip" at the top to sit on. Or I freeze a go-gurt and put them in her lunch box.

Cheese and crackers (those combo packs with sticks)
graham crackers
Teddy Grahams
Cereal bar
Granola bar

**Don't send in the pudding! It's pretty messy and that's not going to go over well!**

Have you tried freeze dried fruits? They are less sticky and not chewy like the others. They are crunchy and have no added anything. We like the strawberries and pineapple from Target.

Other ideas...
celery with ranch or cream cheese
hummus on a mini bagel or pita
cheese cubes
graham crackers

I think even stuff that needs refrigeration will be okay if you pull it from the fridge and put it in her back pack for a couple of hours.

What time is her lunch? I wouldn't worry too much about it being a large snack. I think most kids have 4 to 5 hours between breakfast and lunch. If she has a snack in between, it will probably only be 2 or 2 1/5 hours before lunch. It doesn't have to be much, just a little something to keep her going.

I really liked Retta's comment to keep sending the same snack until she tells you otherwise. Kids at this age really don't need that much variety. I have to keep reminding myself of that when my kids keep asking for peanut butter or ham and cheese or apples. They don't need the variety that adults need.

If you find 3 or 4 snacks that she likes, you will probably be set for a couple of months.

We didn't get snack in kindergarten but in first grade, he's allowed one. It has to be healthy though so only fruit, veggies or crackers/cheese. And it has to be small, they said. Snack time is not very long.
