Language Delay/Early Intervention Services

My husband and I are looking into early intervention service for our 21 month old son. He babbles a lot but gets new words very slowly and will not repeat when we try to teach him a new word. I am curious about others experiences with Early Intervention Services in NYC and if anyone has a recommendation about which agency we should use to make the referral and do the therapy if we decide it is necessary. I would love to hear about other families that have has issues with language delay as well.

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

I'm the mom of a 10 year old boy who had early intervention when he was between 2 and 3 yrs. old. I don't have an agency to recommend - we used TheraCare but it didn't seem that great although I liked the therapist. I am a big proponent of Early Intervention so I think you are really smart to do this. If you get an evaluation that indicates your son would benefit from therapy, you'll get good help. It might seem like the therapist is just playing with your son sometimes, but ask them what they are targeting and you can do it yourself between sessions.

My son (12 y/o now) had apraxia (language delay due to motor skills). He didn't babble at all and rarely made sounds as a baby. He didn't say his first words until after 2 and they were few and monosyllables. I got him into speech therapy by 3. That was in Canada, where we're from, but here in NY with our 3rd child, we're in the process of dealing with EI with physical therapy. So far I've found them to be pretty fast. We've only been through the evaluation process so far, but our daughter has been approved for the service and will be seeing a therapist soon. From what I understand I've had no choice about the agency. I called the number, was referred to the Bronx office (where we live) and then people started coming! From what I understand, our case will be given to a therapist and they come to the house to begin the service. Also, they do the evaluation and decide if your child is elegible. If they decide that he's not, then you will probably have to find therepy privately. I would urge you to follow-up on the speech tho. The earlier he gets help the better. I wished I had my son start a little earlier, but i had so many people kindly telling me that "he'll start talking when he's ready"! Not so. He still has issues with his speech and we all have to ask him to repeat himself often. It doesn't help that he speaks quickly and there's a history of stuttering in his family! Good luck with everything!

I have a son that has been in the Early Intervention Program for 2 1/2 years now. Love my therapists and love the way he responded to them!!

If you have concern it can't hurt to call up and get him evaluated. They will let you know if he qualifies. If he doesn't, then you know you have nothing to worry about. If you do than you get help. And best of all its free!

My daughters communicated in a way that's called twin speech, as long as I SPOKE to them they learned to speak normally. My uncle didn't speak until he was 4yo and now we can't shut him up! In my opinion, as long as he is babbling, and says some words sometimes, he doesn't have much to say right now. I would consider waiting a little longer and see how it goes.
