Lawnmower Issues....Again

I purchased a Toro lawn mower 3 years ago and started having problems with the self-propelled wheels and electric start from day one.

I did purchase an extended warranty, which is now expired. In May 2012, I took the mower into a local lawnmower repair service for repairs. After two weeks in the repair shop, my self-propelled was fixed, but my electric start still did not work. I had to pay $38.00 for a repair that the extended warranty would not cover. After taking it back again, my electric start still does not work. The lawn repair service center held my mower “hostage” for three weeks due to the extended warranty company not providing payment. Now they will not fix it again without me paying, and their 30 day warranty on repairs is expired.

I called home depot, spoke with the store manager and she gave me two "customer satisfaction" answers:

1. bring it in and their service center will repair.

2. they will give me a discount on a new one.

I cannot afford another one, as this one was over $400.00. Do I trust them repairing it, hopefully them fixing it correctly, and then continue struggling to cutting the gas?

I honestly don't know.
What I do know is that our lawnmower repair guy has told my husband that self-propelled models (for whatever reason) tend to need repair work more than the standard push variety. Husband always wants the self-propelled ones (I can understand why! I was out mowing the lawn earlier today...) and even with annual tune-ups, etc... we still end up replacing our mower about every 4 years or so. On average.

The last time I looked, Toro did not have the best ratings. It seems like at one time they were a great brand, but not so much anymore. $400 is not an especially expensive amount for a self-propelled. Especially if you got the large rear wheels.

I think, as aggravating as it sounds, that if Home Depot is willing to repair it, that I would take it to them and let them repair it. If they CAN'T repair it, then I would be looking for some sort of "lemon" replacement discount. A HUGE one. And I'd choose a different brand.

The problem is you bought a crappy lawn mower. Toro has a mess of bells and whistles, that break, and nothing else.

Honda is the way to go with small mowers. I paid right around four hundred fifteen years ago. The only thing I have had to deal with is blade sharpening.

My advice is to find a shop that sells Hondas and will finance. Buy a new one because that mower is going to continue to cause you grief and at some point is going to cost more than just buying a new one.

Since you are where you are now - bring it in to the service center. If they can't repair it take the discount. It is such a booger messing with a broken lawnmower. Ours broke last year and I was actually thankful for the drought as we had no grass to mow. . . .
If even with the discount, too expensive, check craig's list and other places for used lawnmowers.
We had a snapper and it ran for more than a decade, but not self propelled, and it finally bit the dust after two engines - LOL. We now have a hasquvarna (sp) I love it!!!

Put a ad in the news paper and sell it for what you can get out of it and then check on craigs list for a good used one.Toros are junk in my book...and for shack depo I wouldn't shop there again....Good luck.
