Leaky Sippy Cups

I am sooo frustrated w/ leaky sippy cups. Has anyone found a sippy cup that doesn't leak or spray when dropped. My son is 18 months old and I have tried 2 or 3 name brands & store brands and haven't found a real good one yet. When my son drops the cup (which he does frequently) milk or juice either sprays or ends up leaking out because the "leak proof" spout has fallen into the liquid. I see that they sell more of the spouts, but ours look fine so I have't tried buying replacments yet. Any help?????

Hello- they have Nuby sippy cups with a hard lid instead of the soft lid (my son bit through the soft), they work well. Also, most places will also have the sippy cups (don't know brand) that the spout is in the lid and there is nothing that needs snapped in place. The cups I am talking about will have different characters on them, ie. Elmo, Cars... . I always use these and they work well even with my very, very active and destructive 2 year old son!

We use a couple of kinds. The Avent ones seem to be the best. because of how they are constructed, the leakproof part can't fall off into the liquid. We, also, use the playtex sippy cups and the first years sippy cups. I have yet to have the leakproof part fall out of the playtex ones. The first years ones that we have do not have a separate leakproof part. It is all built into the lid.

Overall, I like the Avent best. You can actually get the sippy lids separately to change their bottles into sippy cups or you can buy the sippy cups they make. I like the bottles converted to sippy cups because I know exactly how much my little guy is getting since it has the ounces marked on there.

Well, Marla looks like you got quite the responses! I use Gerber and Playtex and NEITHER leak at all and my 9 month old has been using them both since 5 months. Good luck!

Hi Marla,

I like the nuby sippy cups. They are great because they are easy to drink from and they don't leak. The only problem with them is that you often have to replace the nipples because if your child chews on them the hole will get too large and then they will leak. I buy the replacements on line in packs of 5 and that works well for us.

I feel your pain, Sometimes I just want to march right down to the playtex company and give them a piece of my mind. I think that i have at least one of every brand. I like the first years ones with the caracters on them (insulated), but i guess after numerous hits on the floor, the inside cracked on one. I also have several with straws and gerbers straw leaked, but i bought a giant brand no leaking , but splashes a little when opening the straw part. Playtex has also been a favorite but yes they do fall out sometimes. My least favorite cup was the take and toss, because when my son tossed the lid came flying of and milk when every where.
So end result if you find the perfect cup, announce it to the world and hope it isn't just a dream.
Good luck

the first years has a twist on lid that has an attatched cap. I have only found them at babies r us (not toys). the leak proof spout is on the inside and they cant chew in it and it doesnt come out. there is only a small slit in it and very easy to keep clean.

I am a Nuby user as well.
My son chews like crazy on them, which is what makes them leak.
I have found that the disposable ones from I think First Years (they come in the primary colors) work really well. They are only about 6 ounces but they don't leak.

I honestly like the regular style playtex - i have used them for 7 years between my two kids - and they are really the only kind i will use.you can get them with characters on them (my son has cars ones) - now i will say they can tend to be on the more expensive side of things - i think a single cup is like $5 or $6 bucks (although you can find the two packs at Toys R Us for cheaper than buying separatly. The other BIG selling point for me on these is that you can purchase replacement valves for the cups - because reality is that after awhile the valve doesn't stay in as well - so instead of having to replace the entire cup you can replace just the valve - hope that helps!

The only sippy cups I ever had and still have are following:

The First Years Sesame Street Insulated Cup Deluxe 2-pack (also come in Cars pattern)

There are no valves to clean and these cups have never leaked. I got mine at Wal-Mart. Check them out here so you know what you are looking for:

I've had good luck with the Take and Toss sippy cups They don't have a seperate spout, which seems to be the key. However, the best cups we have found are this style:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2574149

I found them at Costco for a lot less than they are at Toys R Us or Target, but they are definately worth the money. Straws are a wonderful thing!

I had the same problem. I found that Gerber makes the best sippy cups as far as leaking goes. You just have to make sure the stopper is in tight. I can't tell you how many times my daughter has dropped her cup and turned it upside down and it didn't leak. The worst cups in my opinion were Nuby and Playtex (Nuby being the worst of the two). Gerber also has replacement stoppers that you can buy at Babies R' Us. Good luck!

Yep, the Gerber color change cups are great. THey are always falling or being dropped. NOT A DROP comes out. I love them and the color change part is pretty cool to watch.

Hi Marla....My daughter is still using cups that I bought from Wal-Mart and we LOVE them. We bought the store brand, 2pack, "straw-style", 9oz cups. The ONLY way I have found that they have leaked at all was if I didnt have the straw in correctly or if she literally had the cup upside down and the straw BENT! The straws "hide" inside to keep them clean and such. The ones we bought lasted about a year and a half...and that is pretty good with daily use and having them cleaned in the dishwasher! Best of Luck to you and your family!

Do you have the kind that have a flexible piece that attaches to the bottom of the lid that comes off to clean? We would just make sure that was totally pushed up all of the way and they NEVER leaked. The looser you leave that piece, the easier the liquid comes out, but when they were your son's age, we always had it pushed all the way up. I think they were Playtex?

Hi. We also have this problem. I have switched to cups without valves. The ones I use are insulated and usually have Disney or Sesame Street characters on them. The lids are a solid color. The brand may be The First Years.

Good Luck

We use the cups with straws. My daughter started using them at 18 months, and they seem to work the best for us, and they're easier to keep clean!

I use the Playtex insulated cups. The valve fits snugly and never falls out. Plus it keeps the drink cold. I got a 4-pack at BJs for $12.

I think you'll have a hard time finding a perfect one - I think the ones I like best are the ones without the valve. In the spirit of trying them out also :), I also tried to drink out of them and found that the valve is really difficult to get anything out so I actually gave up the leakproof idea for cups that my daughter can actually drink out of more easily. I found some of the smaller ones (I think another mom mentioned them as well) with just two parts - top and bottom - and those have worked the best, for not spilling too much AND for my daughter being able to drink.

my kids are pretty much done with sippy cups but i remember when they were your son's age i had one that was pretty good....have you tried the ones by avent? i remember the sip part being available for different stages of teething, etc but i don't ever remember having trouble with them leaking. here's some on amazon....http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Avent-Magic-Twin-Pack/dp/B0...
(if you want to copy and paste that whole thing...i know it's long but it shows pics with info and reviews). It seems some people have had leaking probs but it would appear that most of them are from not assembling properly. see what you think.

I have tried so many but believe it or not a friend of mine got one for me at the Family Dollar stores that is fabulous!!! She got it for me because my son was obsessed with my sport-top water bottles. I hope you have some Family Dollar stores in your area.

They come in blue, neon green/lime, and hot pink. There are only two parts the top and the cup (thank goodness!) The company that makes them is InZone. I found them in the storage container aisle. Make sure you get the ones that are solid not the flip up straw thingy. And best of all they are only $1.50. Several of the moms from my Mommy and Me class have now gone out and got these since they really don't leak!! I hope you can find them. Good luck!!!

I really like the first years ones. They don't have those valve things that are a pain to clean. They are like 7.99 for 2 and come in Elmo and Cars prints. I haven't had any major leaking with them.

Have you tried a nuby cup? They have molded silicone spouts instead of the hard plastic with the valve. I got mine at walmart...the only down side seems to be that they can break through if chewed on for a long time.

Still they might work out for you and are pretty inexpensive. Just get the molded tip kind because it's a name brand and there are other types.

Also, maybe try transitioning to a straw sippy?

I bought my twins a spill proof sippy cup made by platex. I found them at Mr. Z's. They were a bit expensive but we have used them for about 2 years now and have had no spilling or leaking.

unfortunately, this will continue to happen. I am a mom of 3 and i have yet to find one. I have used from playtex to gerber and even though the designs are a little different. Try buying the replacement it might have a tighter fit since its new. the one that seems to stick the most is playtex the inner piece is long clear flexi rubber that is inserted into two wholes in the cup. these seem to hold the best. hope this helps.;-)
