It is best to just wait until she is ready. It may be difficult for her to do it yet as her fine motor coordination may not be developed enough yet. My son learned from a friend at daycare when he was 4, but not after we had tried numerous times to teach him. Every child develops at a different pace and I have found it best to let things come naturally as they are ready to learn.

Hey T., I have four year old daughter who just learned how to tie her shoes. The way she learned was to make her make two bunny ears and then wrap one ear around the other one. It seemed to work, within one day. We might have set there for an hour with her getting fustrated and fussing at her shoes but now she gets up in the morning and wants to tie everyones shoes and all her friends shoes in her class at school.

When you find out let me know. I have a 4 year old will be 5 in April. I have been trying to get her to tie her shoes for the past year. She got the first step.

My son is also trying so very hard to tie his shoes. I use the two bunny ears method to teach him. I went to the Dollar Store and brought a cheap pair of shoe (adult size) for him to pratice on. He is getting better at it. So maybe that might help.

T.,

I have a 6 yr old also that is learning to tie her shoes. We gave her a old shoe to take along everywhere we went to practice in the car. She has almost mastered it. We do the bunny running around the tree into the bunny hole. I hope that helps

Hey T.!

My 5 year old daughter just learned to tie her shoes in one day!!! -She's usually very quick to try and give up on something that doesn't come easy to her. I bought a book through the Scholatic Book Clubs that has 2 different color laces built into it and includes two different sets of instructions (bunny ears and traditional) for the PARENTS TO LEARN HOW TO TEACH our kids!! IT WORKED GREAT! We struggled with it for about a year before I got this book. And like I said, it was literally one day, I showed her the bunny ears method based on the directions given with pictures!... and she had it - and didn't want to stop!!

Good luck to you and your daughter! Just be patient- she'll get it too!

The bunny trick is new to me...we made a "tree" and the squirrel ran around the tree and then tucked into a hole. <grin>

You can spend six month helping a child learn to tie a shoe or you can wait until they are ready and teach them in five minutes.
