My friends daughter has leukemia she spent a long time in the Brimingham hospital she got better and went home, yesterday she was taken back to brimingham (1 hour away) Doctors said she had a blood infection they put her in a coma and paralyzed her. They also told her parents that this is what most cancer patients die from because their immune systems are so weak from chemo they can't fight infections. I am really worried but want honesty can anyone tell me anything about this and if she has a chance?

It doesn't sound good. They'll have her on massive doses of antibiotics/antivirals that would make her feel as if she was being burned alive if she was awake, so the coma is a kindness (so too, she needs every scrap of energy her body can muster in order to fight the infection)... but even with all of that help, her chances are slim.

It is true that most die from infections. The immune system gets so lowered during treatment. I know they are trying to do everything the can. We have had one firend child beat the odds of Leukimia and another beautiful angel not.
The best thing you can do is pray. It is important that you be honest with your daughter. If you are close enough to them to help take care of the house or other kids offer. Do not take it personally if they can't /wont talk or except help. Please if you know what type of cancer she has use the site sugggested previously, that way you can better understand what they tell you. I know it helped my close friend not having to repeat everything to me. And hope for them all the best. Honestly her situatuin does sound very bad, although it is common to use drug induced commas to try and fight as hard and humanely as the possibly can.

My son was diagnosed with leukemia 3 1/2 years ago. Though he got many fevers and minor viral infections during his course of treatment he never got anything of this magnitude. Have they asked the doctors about giving her meds that boost white boost cell production, such as nupagen. In my son's case he only ever got that one time when he was in the hospital for two weeks with some sort of infection (not a blood infection) that he couldn't fight off. The docs really debated about giving it to him. My understanding is that since leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells, if you stimulate production of the white blood cells before you get rid of the leukemia you are stimulating the leukemia. So it seems that it is a catch 22 situation, but something to inquire about. My heart goes out to all of you. I will keep her in my prayers.
My husband's friend has a teenage daughter (14) that has leukemia, I don't know of her treatment or anything since we are not close with them but it's been 3 years since she was first diagnosed and doing much better. I'm sorry I don't know much more details but what I know is that children with leukemia seem to have a much better odds than adults with the disease.
