My 3 year old has lice, I have tried all the shampoos that they sell at the store and yet I can't get rid of them. I have washed everything in the house a thousand times over and I cannot get them to go away. Every night I spend an hour or so picking through her hair. I am about ready to shave her head! Anyone who has any ideas on how I can de-lice my poor child I would appreciate it.

Hi M.,
Mayonnaise. My neighbor's daughter has had lice for 7 weeks now. The child has been treated with everything over the counter--and the lice keep coming back. My neighbor has done everything including bombing her house with bug spray and cleaning everything every single day for the past 7 weeks. My neighbor finally decided she's had enough, called the doctor today in tears because she just doesn't know what else to do. The doctor told her to put mayonnaise on the child's head--plaster the mayo all over the entire head and put a shower cap over the child's head when you're through. You can also use olive oil, but it's too drippy, so they recommended mayo which supposedly works as well. Keep the mayo w/cap on the head for 2-3 hours, comb the head and pick out the lice and then wash the head. Apparently, the mayo leaves a thick film on the hair that repels the lice from sticking on. I hope this helps you. I feel for you--my neighbor is at her wits end with this mess.

M.,
My teen daughter had lice last year and after repeated shampooings, a near empty home, the constant cleaning etc etc, I started to worry about the toxins in the shampoo. My sister told me about reading of using mayonnaise. Aaaaall that money for that shampoo and seven dollars worth of mayo, dollar store shower caps, plastic wrap and 12 hours and they were never seen again.
i slathered the mayo on her hair, starting at the scalp and making sure the skin was covered. Mayonnaise is a suffocant for them. then I put a cheap clear plastic showercap on, then wrapped her head with the plastic wrap cause I didn't want it to leak or come off at night. then another cap, more plastic wrap, a bandana (my daughter has a lot of hair and i really didnt want it all sliding off in bed), then a thick shower cap and more plastic wrap.
Non poisonous and it worked.
Good luck, I know its so difficult

When I was young and I got lice it took me forever to get rid of it. My hair was so thick that they always found somewhere to hide. My Mom was about ready to cut off all my hair too. We always had to get the perscription brands and use two at once. Then my Mom had to seperate my hair piece by piece and it always took a REALLY long time. Good luck. You will make it through this though. Just make sure to replace everything such as sheets on the bed and pillows. Sometimes those little buggers can get inside the pillow and get out again. Bag up all the stuffed animals, dolls, anything that was slept with or played with that those little guys may hide in. You may also want to treat the carpet, in the whole house.
Don't forget to treat your carseat where her head touches.
Good luck
Hello!
Have you ever heard of Melaleuca products they are excellent? Some of their products contain Melaleuca oil (you may have heard of it as Tea Tree Oil).
Hi Michelle, She is probably picking it back up from school and somewhere. If she has had this a while then you also need to look at her stuffed animals, dolls, and the rest of the family should get shampooed also. Get new pillows and maybe bomb the house... does she lay on the same spot on the floor, etc? Also make sure she is not using her best friends hat while she is at school, or borrowing a cool jacket, etc. That is really where it is coming from. Good luck.
Hi M.,
First off, along with washing everything you need to vacuum everything that cannot be washed. Including the car and the car seat that the child rides in. Empty the vacuum immediately and remove the garbage bag from the home. And anything that is small enough but can't be washed in water should be run through the dryer on high heat for about 30 minutes (i.e. pillows, stuffed animals and such). Also, a little unorthodox but it works, lice hate alcohol(and it kills them). So, when I was faced with a stubborn situation I purchased the rubbing alcohol with lanolin(it was green), soaked everyones hair with it. I wrap the heads in plastic wrap and leave the alcohol on for about half an hour, after which I brush the hair thoroughly over newspaper so that I can dispose of the dead lice. Before washing the hair I massage the hair with mayonaise(I know, but hey it's greasy). Something in the mayonaise breaks down the glue from the nits and makes it easier to wash them away. I follow up with two more treatments like this every 5 days. I use this method for the simple fact that the lice shampoos on the market contain a poison and a stubburn case means subjecting my children's heads to constant use and was not to my liking. And by the way, using the alcohol with lanolin and the mayo left the childrens hair soft and manageable. Works on the adults too. And you need to be treating everyone who lives in the home, and the homes of everyone where the child has had contact or visits regularly.
Hi M.. I saw this product line at Carnival Cuts last week. I am not sure if it works or not but they even have a daily shampoo for prevention, once you get things cleared up. Good luck.

I have heard that olive and neem oils work wonderfully and are not full of toxic pesticides that they can build an resistance to. The oils suffocate the lice, so they can not become immune to it. I have not heard of the mayo treatment before today, but it sounds like it would work the same way.
My daughter, neice and nephew all had lice for 11 months. We also did everything possible to get rid of them. Nothing worked. I finally went to her pediatrician and got her to give me a prescription. My daughter was also 3 years old and was too young for this medication, however, because it had been so long the doctor gave it to me. I read all the warnings and chickened out. A few more monthes went by and still nothing changed. I went back to the doctor and she gave me the script again. It took four minutes and I have not seen them since. I wish I could tell you the name of the medication, but I have forgotten it.
If your 3 year old has them, then EVERYONE has them and EVERYONE including yourself need to be treated. Everyone needs to be treated, the bedding and house needs to be cleaned all in the same day. Not a fun thing to deal with. Good Luck
