OKay my son has Lice, I am sick of it, and nothing I do seems to do works. Short of shaving his head any better Ideas that HAVE worked for ya'all. Mayonaise, I'v e tried it, Rid , didn't work. Thank you
If he is young or you have more kids, consider buying a Robi comb. It cost me $25 at Walmart but so worth it and they won't fight you near as much. It uses a battery and zaps the lice and nits. Use every 2-3 days for about 2-3 weeks. This saved me lots of aggravation!!!!

When my daughter came home from school and I did all that and it didn't work I called my Grandma and asked her what to do. She told me to wash her hair in Tide the orignal scent, in the box. I washed hers and mine every other weekend for 12 weeks. I hope this works for you like it did me. Good luck.

Hi C.,
Lice can be very stubborn. When my niece had it we had to treat her hair ( we used the mayo and vinegar) and put a plastic bed mattress cover on the bed and use anti allergy pillow cases, we also used lavender shampoo and conditioner, they can't stand the smell of it. We vacuumed every day and repeated the treatment in a week, then again another week later. We also put the stuffed animals in a bag for two weeks that could not be washed and dried. Good luck!

Hello, I know you said Rid didn't work. I had the same problem, I started using Rid every 3 to 4 days instead of the 7-10 days it suggested. I did this for abt 2 weeks. This will break the cycle. It worked. I put anything that couldn't be washed (favorite toy, quilt, pillow) in the dryer. Heat kills. All other toys went into black plastic bags for 2 weeks. A good site is

I am the owner of Shearz for Kidz in New Braunfels TX and lice is a huge issue in Texas. I carry a product called Fairy Tales for Children Rosemary Repel -there is a shampoo, conditioner, a leave-in spray (my favorite), and a hair gel (great for boys) as well as a Lice Good-bye (which actually gets rid of lice if you have it). Anyway, these products actually REPEL lice-I spray my 3 children's hair every morning before school and they WILL NOT GET IT-this beats having to get rid of it anytime!!!
The product is organic and all natural and smells great!!!
my web-site is www.shearzforkidz.com if you want further info on the product.
I do not know where you live-but I am in the process of setting up an on-line store to mail order the product. not quite done yet but if you don't live close, I would be happy to mail it to you. The prducts are $11.95 each and the lice-good-bye is $20.95 (it is a mousse that you apply and then use the nit comb) and there are larger sizes as well(which I use on my 3 kids for economical value). Hope this helps.
and for immediate needs-there is a product call Blue Ice or something like that sold at walgreen's that is organic as well and is a thick gel you apply and leave on at night-it turns hard and then you rinse in the morning-to get rid of lice. I have heard good things about it.

I know you said you tried mayonaise but did you let it set for a couple of hours on the head in a shower cap to let it really saturate the hair i did this every sunday while the kids watched cartoons or there favorite show then combed the hair out after using the dawn dish soap to wash it out to get rid of the greasy look but it did work for me. the shampoos and prescriptions can be bad for kids thats why they say not to use but every 7-10 days. mayo is natural and non toxic. I hope this helps you i know it is very frustrating to go through this.

Olive oil! Saturate his hair in the evening & let him sleep in it. Lice can hold their breath for up to 8 hours. The next morning, pick through it with a lice comb. Then he can wash with shampoo for oily hair 2-3 times until the olive oil is out. Repeat every 7-10 days until the lice are gone. It's non-toxic & he'll have gorgeous hair afterwards. I battled it with my kids and self & it works when nothing else will. Stay strong!

Thanks to an extended family camping trip, both of my girls got lice and the only thing that worked after shampoos and sprays, was coating their head completely in vasoline and a plastic shower cap overnight. I on the other hand found one bug crawling on my head. I already knew the shampoos were not going to work on this super bug and since it was time to color my hair, guess what, I colored my hair and never had another problem. That has probably been 8 years ago and I or my girls have never had them again.

My daughter seemed to have lice every time I turned around. I don't know where you live, but there is a Lice Patrol in Sugar Land that has some great stuff. Email me and I can get you the directions to the place. Once we got rid of the lice, I started shampooing her hair with Tea Tree oil a couple of times a week. This seems to have kept the lice away. Apparently, they do not like the minty smell and the oil does not allow them to latch onto the hair and lay eggs. I did the mayo and everything else just like you have. This is the only thing that has worked for us.

Last summer I found a message board where people posted their home remedies for lice. This is what FINALLY worked for our kids: Saturate the hair with Listerine. Cover head with a shower cap. Leave in for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Then saturate the hair with vinegar. Cover head with shower cap. Leave in for 1 hour. Wash out with shampoo then use a nit comb on the whole head.
I used spray bottles to saturate the hair. The Listerine is an antiseptic and kills the lice while the vinegar dissolves the glue that keeps the nits on the hair. Also, be careful not to get in your child's eyes.
Hope this helps!

There is an amazing product called "Lice Ice", you get it at HEB in our area. You leave it on for 8-10 hours and it freezes the ice. Then a daily deterrent along with combing daily is Listerine, the original old-fashioned kind your grandparents used. We fought lice for a couple of months the first time, until we found Lice Ice. The second time our girls got them, we put it on immediately and after 2 treatments, and a few pickings, they were gone! Good luck!

Never heard about the mayonaise thing, but I do know the reason why nothing worked . . . you have to get every single egg and clean every single thing that the lice could come in contact with . . . stuffed animals, bed linens, hats, combs, coats, clothes . . . everything.
I went through this with my daughter when she was young. Her head was just shy of raw from all the lice shampoo, it was terrible. she had light blonde hair and I just couldn't seem to get all the eggs so they came back.
I finally found a comb that was battery operated and worked like a bug zapper - -it was about $30 but sorry I don't remember the name - - I found it at the drug store with the lice treatments. took a lot of time to sit down and comb through her long thick hair and we had to do it every night for a while (hint - either work outside or put down a sheet and carefully fold and wash when you are done . . don't let the little boogers out in the house!), but it worked.
For the house hold stuff, vacuum (several times)everything that you can't put in hot water. Wash and dry (the important part is the dry) with the hottest possible setting - fry those little monsters - anything you can. Everything that can't be washed or vacuumed (like stuffed animals and some pillows) seal up in a plastic trash bag for about a week; make sure the bag is sealed tight - no air in or out - sufficate the monsters.
It is a pain to get them out of the house/head and keep them out, but once you are done you will feel relieved. . . and remember, you don't get lice from being dirty, infact they like a clean head better than a dirty one .. their eggs stick better. . . so don't let anything make you feel like you are "low class" . . . you are just one of the "lucky ones".

have you bagged everything else up and put it away for 4 weeks or so (pillows, stuffed animals etc) washed everything? One of my daughters had it and i also used tea tree oil along with regular shampoo and then let it sit on her head for about 1 hour and then picked it again (i continued using the tea tree oil/shampoo mix for about 2 weeks- but just as a usual shampooing not leaving it in) also you can put head phones, hats etc in the freezer for 12 hours and that kills them too. I have 4 girls and no one else got it- I had my daughter that had it sleep on a cot for about 1 week and every morning she brought down her "sheets" and I washed them- good luck.

We went through this just a couple of months ago....not fun.
Go to www.nuvoforheadlice.com. This treatment uses Cetaphil cleanser (instructions are on the website). You must follow the instructions carefully but basically it smothers the lice then you do it on the same the next week and one more so it interupts their cycle. It worked for us plus LOTs of combing with a nit comb. You can get this from Walgreens. You may want to cut his hair super short. I couldn't do this to more daughter (although I was tempted!). Good luck!

Oh yuck......I hate lice.....but unfortunately my kids were hit with it a few years ago, and we had a battle back and forth with it for months trying to find all the culprits hiding the lice. I've found that using the metal comb 2 times a day vacuuming all the beds carpeting, washing everything washable, bagging up all non washable toys or fabric items, treating the animals with flea soaps, helps. The problem lies with making sure you remove all of the bugs and eggs, and making sure that there not any eggs on the hair shafts period. If your kids regularly go to friends or familys homes then they will want to also do the same thing. All it takes is for one bug to lay eggs and its spread. I never believed in using pesticides on my kids hair so that's why I went with the comb only and washing and vaccuming. Also don't neglect checking the hubby and yourself for them too.

I so know how you feel! I have been dealing with this issue for months and I do FINALLY have the answer. After I got educated I learned that none of the over the counter products nor the rx's work anymore...the bugger have become tolerant. The only way is to truly remove them all. There is a place in Sugar land called The Lice Squad - ###-###-#### and www.texaslicesquad.com. They charge $100 for the first hour and $75 each hour after, but it is WELL WORTH IT. After months and hundreds of dollars on other things, this actually completely worked. Call them, they will educate you and take care of your son. They are really great. I just wish I had known about them months ago.

For your home, go to the pet store and purchase Adams Flea and tick spray. It kills lice and their eggs. You can spray the carpets, mattresses, etc, and sleep on them the same night. You can also get a shampoo that will probably work better than anything the drug store has. Don't be put off by the word "dog and cat".. If it is safe for them, it is safe for your child as well.

We are using Lice Ice because it worked on my grandaughter before. She has very thick black hair and we tried everything until the pediatrician told her to get Lice Ice. Took one treatment then spray everyday for 1 week and they were gone. Using it right now on baby granddaughter 2 yrs old. Little worried about using it on her but I tried nix on me and still have live bugs.
Hate the smell though but it will work. Lice Ice.
By the way, my son took a bug off, we put it in a baggie (he never saw one before and was terrified). I got the Rid spray and spayed it in the bag. Took about 4 hours to die! Use the vacuum and ditch spraying pesticides.

But tea tree oil, it stinks but it helps, put it in your shampoo you use on your child and nit comb daily! Also, a few parents don't think about the car seat, make sure it has been treated, and if he takes a blanket to school make sure the school is putting all blankets in ziplocs so they don't cross contaminate. Try this and see if it helps.

Remember too that lice like clean hair. do not wash his hair every day, as, it makes it easier for the lice to stay attached to his hair. If his hair has some sort of product in it, it makes it harder. I know someone who washes her daughter's long hair every other day, and, only conditions on the off days. Her theory is that it makes her hair too slippery for the lice to stick onto. also, you do have to sit for hours and take each nit out, as grueling as it is. You have to get it out of the house as well, as pointed out below. I was up all night the night one of my daughters came home with it. Also, we treated the whole family, just as a precaution. My two daughters and myself all had long, thick hair, and, I did not want to battle it forever.
OK, now I am itching just thinking about it!!!

Before you use the RID, you must rid your house of lice as well. It gets everywhere. Stuffed animals pack in plastic garbage bag and seal off all air. They stay in the bag 2 or 3 weeks. The lice will suffocate. Get rid of all old pillows, wash all sheets, blankets, mattress pads, laundry in HOT water, it kills the lice. We go to the laundry mat with everything that can be washed. You and your husband RID your head and the child all the same time. It does work, you must attack the house and your heads at the same time.

Not sure how you did the mayonnaise thing..but I added enough white vinegar to it that after they were well mixed it was the consistency of a shampoo or conditioner...then i caked my children's hair with it and covered their hair with plastic shower caps that I tied off with rubber bands to be sure they remained in place. The whole mess was left in place for 24 hours. After which they were thoroughly washed out twice and then carefully combed outside so all the nits fell off their heads somewhere besides inside my home...
Dom't forget to dry (washing isn't the big deal, it's the heat that kills them) all their clothes and bedding, plus use the spray that came with your rid stuff on your furniture and vacuum your home thoroughly. Also, you might wash your baseboards with bleach. It will help keep them from breeding in your floors and living on your pets and family (lice is the only thing that can be transfered from pets to humans and vice/versa)...
Good Luck... ;-)

My daughters are 18 and 21... so it's been a while. However, when they were younger we went through 3-4 bouts with the little critters. My older daughter's hair is THICK... so getting rid of them was a NIGHTMARE. There is a product called Lice Free. I used it recently for a puppy so I know it's still available. Then, you have GOT to get rid of every little nit. For WEEKS I checked them daily (at night usually, while we watched TV.). It's a hassle, but it can be overcome.
Also, they tell us teachers that we rarely get Lice (even with active cases in our classes)... because we use products in our hair like gel, mousse...etc... AND we blow dry our hair... GOOD LUCK!

The main part of getting rid of lice is picking out the nits. It takes forever, but you have to do it. You need to treat and spend several hours going through each and every hair on his head and pull off the nits. Treat again in a week. Again, go through every hair. Wash his bedclothes in hot soapy water and dry in a hot dryer. His pillows should be dried in a hot dryer or tied up in a plastic bad for three weeks. Let the school nurse know who his friends are so that she can check them. The kids could just be passing the lice back and forth.
