So What Happened?

Thanks for all the input. We did the vacuum, wash, dry, bag, & shampoo and we are picking and combing like crazy - I happened upon this LiceMeister Comb http://www.headlice.org/licemeister/ which seems to be working better than the one from the shampoo, the teeth are closer together and we have fine hair. I think we are going to make it thru - just so much effort for these teeny tiny pests! If we ever encounter this again I would prefer to not use the chemicals - they seem harsh and I am not convinced that they help that much, they only kill the live bugs and then the eggs hatch and there are more, right? Tea tree oil and smothering them both sound promising, and the Nuvo Method sounds really interesting, I am going to read that right now!

There is this stuff called licerex my friend got it online and with one treatment they were gone. I know it is extremley expensive but it works. It is also all natural so it's not harmful to you or your children. Good Luck I know it's a big pain.

We had them early this summer, and this fall there is a big outbreak around here. I keep hearing about different kids with them. I check my kids at least twice a week now.

They are resistant to RID and NIX. Please, do not depend on these products and the 7-day delay they advocate. You will just frustrate yourself. You can use the pesticides, but you also have to comb/pick nits at least every two days!!! The spray products don't work (there are studies online) and just spread pesticides around your house. Vacuuming and washing is fine.

The method that finally worked for us to get rid of those last eggs/bugs is described on www.nuvoforheadlice.com. Messy, but I swear it works.

Been there! We used RID and it works great. I have 2 girls so it took awhile to comb their hair. Wash anything that is possible in hot water and dry it on the hottest setting. Don't forget any jackets they have used lately. Vaccuum everything rugs, couch, drapes, everything. Put stuffed animals in a garbage bag and put in it in the garage or attic and forget you have them for a few weeks. I never used the powders on the rugs etc.. and did not have a problem. After the second time I started spraying hairspray on their hair every day before school and we have not had it since. I don't know if it is the hairspray or not but I am not taking any chances.

I just went through this about a month ago and I was so frustrated b/c I was pregnant and worried I had lice too. I used Rid on my daughter who was sent home when they found one tiny little egg on her head. I didn't see any as I was checking her daily since the school had such bad outbreaks. The Rid seemed to work, altough I don't think she had much to begin with. I recently asked for home remedies for lice back when she had it so you can look at those on mamasource too, but I think most of your repliers are the same that replied to me too. I found that the nuvo method looked the best and will have to resort to this if she gets it again. The south side of Chicago is rampant right now for some reason with these damn bugs. good luck!!
