My sister is a grade school teacher and she swears by using the shampoo and conditioner with tea tree oil in it.(not only to treat, but to prevent also!) You have to be careful of the strength if you try to use it by itself.... Good luck!
Help! We have lice again! This has been happening for four years now. I can't find the old advice from this website for treating with Tea Tree Oil. Does anyone know how to treat with this oil?

If you have been treating the lice with chemicals for 4 years they have probably become imune to the stuff. Plus, those chemicals will build up over time in your child's system and that isn't healthy.
Anything heavy such as olive oil, mayonaise, vegetable oil, tea tree oil, will all do well because they all smother the lice. And you can put it on as often as you like.
The wonder oil for us that immediately took all lice away was mayonaise. We put it on for an hour and wrapped the head in either a plastic cap or saran wrap and that was all it took. We had tried the chemical base products and even the chemical-free products and nothing worked. This immediately took care of it.
Don't forget to sweep all beds, couches, chairs, floors and wash all stuffed animals regularly until the lice is gone. And if your vacuum has a bag in it you must change it and take it outside each time you sweep. God Bless~
You need to was all of your hair in lice med, vacuum all of your carpets, mattresses, wash all the toys with fur hair that can be washed, the ones that cnat put in a garbage bag and seal tightly and leave for 2 weeks. was everyones sheets and was every piece of clothing that has been wore and if any has been wore and hang up then you will have to wash everything. we did this and they were gone, no more to be seen. this works. you dont need the lice spray or anything like that. call your local health dept and they will tell you exactly what to do.
ok from what i read you are still going to have to use somthing to smother the live lice first here is 3 natral ways
To treat, smother mayo all over the scalp and hair shaft. Cover with a shower cap and leave in the hair for a period of twelve hours. Many treat the scalp prior to bedtime and place the cap on the scalp. The added benefit of using mayo to treat lice is that mayo also nourishes hair, adding rich luster and conditioning dry hair. With a little luck, lice will be eliminated naturally and hair will be full of bounce and shine.
To treat with petroleum jelly, repeat application in the same fashion as the mayo. A strong dish detergent may be needed to remove the oil based residue from the scalp and hair shaft.
Vinegar is believed to remove the glue that allows lice to stick to the scalp, thus preventing their needed feedings and killing the parasite for good. Many have claimed great success with vinegar.
then after you do this to help in the aid of removing nits...
The following treatment for removal of head lice is recommended: Add five to ten drops of pure tea tree oil to a shampoo and wash the child's hair, massaging the mixture thoroughly into the scalp. Do this every day until the eggs are removed. In between shampoos, a few drops of the oil can be massaged into the scalp. Do not rinse out. To help sterilize and prevent further lice infestation, brushes, combs, bedding and towels may be soaked in a tea tree oil solution of 1/4 oz. of oil added to a tub of water. You may also spray a dilution of tea tree oil in the clothes hamper to help control infestation.
hope this helps...
and just so you know just reg. conditioner put on there head and leave it in while combing will help with the removal of the lice and nits...i have known people to get rid of lice live lice and nits with just reg cheap conditioner
put on the head till it is slimy and comb comb comb
This is what worked for us - 1/4 c olive oil, 20 drops tea tree oil, 10 drops lavender, 10 drops rosemary. Apply to hair, wrap head in plastic and then wrap a towel around that. Leave it on as long as your kids will take it, at least an hour. Comb hair with Licemeister comb (order online, works on all hair types, very very good comb). Shampoo hair and then rinse with water, then rinse with half water, half apple cider vinegar. Leave on hair for a few minutes. Comb hair again. Repeat this same thing a week later. Make sure to treat everyone in your family. Ideally treat everyone and then leave your house for a week or so. I have never been able to delouse my house. Just too much house to do. The lice cant survive without a host so we just go. Luckily that was an option for us.
Check out the www.peoplespharmacy.com. They have a lot of home remedies such as listerine, cetaphil, hair clean 1-2-3, etc.
Oh how awful!! We have had lice when my eldest was in gradeschool. I used the Nix and the little comb. I even got them. I actually took my son out of school and called the school board and superintendant's office. After having lice 4 times in a year the school told me it was our fault but when I pulled my son and demanded they check every head in the school they found other children with lice who had never been checked before. One was the little boy who sat next to my son. Good luck, I really feel for you.
I have no idea about the tree oil.
Sorry about this. I just went through this myself with my boys. I still don't know where they got it from but myself I used the tea tree oil and I used natural products to help along with it. When I used the tea tree oil I messaged it in their scalp and hair to soften and dislodge the nits(the eggs of the lice). Don't be stingy with the oil! Comb the oil throught the hair. To fumigat the live insects, wrap their hair in a hot moist towel for 10 minutes. Repeat every other day for at least the next 5 treatments (10 days)
If you are interested in getting in with the natural products that I used along with this. You can check out my websites at www.workathomeunited.com/Heather1307 or www.livetotalwellness.com/Heather1307 or you can email me your name and number at ____@____.com this helps you out and Good Luck.
Hi K.!
I KNOW how you feel! Those things are a real pain to get rid of! I think I responded before. Tho I am glad the tea tree oil worked for you before. I really stand by what has worked for us. We got the Robicomb. It runs on battries and "kills the eggs and lice" on direct contact. We hadnt any problems since. My girls like it too. No Drippy serums or smelly shampoos. Tho it still sucks to have to clean and lysol the entire house all over again. Good Luck!
I recently worked in a boys boarding school in Idaho and we went though this for about 6 months before we got it under control. I talked to several hair salons and searched the internet. Yes, the lice DO NOT LIKE T-TREE oil and will leave where it is used. First off get an OTC lice treatment and also treat all bedding, stuffed animals etc according to the back of the labels. One for the hair and one for the bedding. After you have done those treatments then wash the hair at least every other day with T-Tree Shampoo, then after a while us the T-Tree at least once a week there after to keep the lice off. Lice can jump from head to head at school and sleep overs. Before sleep overs I would wash the hair with T-Tree shampoo and then again after the sleep over. Remember, lice is not a social status thing. Lice do not care how much money you have only that you have a warm head to live on! Good Luck. Watch the types of OTC Head lice shampoo as there are some that in rare cases can cause brain damage with extensive use (see the internet). T-Tree Shampoo (generic from Albertson's or from Paul Mitchell products will not cause any damage as it is a natural products. B. E.
I googled and found these:
http://specialchildren.about.com/od/medicalissues/qt/teat...
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/331354/how_i_tre... - the second page probably is more the type of information that you want, they mention how using full strength tea tree oil on their daughter's head was disastrous and they ended up in the emergency room
http://www.drgreene.com/21_640.html - he mentions tea tree oil shampoo for days 2 through 13

Hi K.. The tea tree oil is used after the hair has been treated and de-liced. I mix the oil into regular shampoo and conditioner and have my girls use it for every shampooing. I am told that the lice do not like the smell of the oil and therefore stay away from the hair. We used the tea tree oil all last school year after the first bout of lice and the girls didn't get lice again that year. We have had a bout with it this year so we are back to the tea tree oil. I also have the girls put their coats, hats scarves, ect. in the dryer as soon as they get home from school and run them for 30 mins. or so in case any are brought home that way. Seems to work for us. Hope it helps you!
I treated our lice very successfully with tea tree oil. I just diluted equal portions oil & water in a spray bottle. Then you just spray their dry hair till it's good & wet and it kills all the lice. Now you do still have to pick them out, but they are all dead. We also sprayed their pillows, mattresses and stuffed animals with it. We never had repeat lice. And whenever they'd come home with 'the note' from school, we'd just spray again for good measure.
It is frustrating dealing with these things, makes you feel dirty. But in truth lice love nice clean hair. But they are still disgusting. I also know there are some shampoos with tee tree oil out there, don't know the brands, but I've heard they are good. Besides, I love the smell of tea tree oil. AND it makes your hair really soft.
I also use it for bug bites & small burns.
Hi K.,
Sorry about your problem. I don't know anything about the tea tree oil, but I do know that when I was raising my step children, they had lice a few times. I always got the perscription from the doctor but in the final rinse, I did a vinegar rinse. I used 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water. This helped to loosen the eggs and any that may possibly still be left alive, it kind of parilized them in order for you to get them out. It worked and we never did have them again. It also took the nasty smell out of thier hair and left it very soft and shiny. Good luck.

We used to go through this all the time when I was a kid into my early teen years until we learned about tea tree oil and the robicomb. The remedy we used was 14 drops tea tree oil in a tablespoon or so of shampoo and then apply to wet scalp. Tie a plastic bag around the head (a large rubberband helps) and leave on for about 45 minutes. You still need to pull out ALL of the eggs though, so you will be able to tell if you really have gotten rid of the problem. You can make a natural spray to spray on furniture and carpet with tea tree oil, lavender, eucalyptus, but I can't remember the exact recipe. It is something like 10 drops eucalyptus, 4 lavender and maybe 7 tea tree oil in a 32 oz spray bottle of warm water. As for stuffed animals and any clothing that cannot be washed and dried on hot, we always found the best way to eradicate the bugs was to put everything in large trash bags and tie them shut and leave them for 2 weeks. As for the comments about putting straight tea tree oil on the scalp...I wouldn't do it. Tea tree oil can burn and it really isn't necessary to use it in full strength. Even the remedy given above, if used frequently can burn. My brother developed a burn on his scalp after we had to continually treat for lice (other kids kept passing it back to us). My advice is to try this tea tree oil hair treatment and the spray and then buy a robicomb. After the burns and recurrent lice infestations that happened to us (I think the lice became immune!), we discovered robicomb. It really worked the best and was the best and easiest way to prevent with no harm done to anyone's scalp! We would continue to use it once a week even after we were rid of the lice and we never got them again. You should be able to find it at the drugstore and it used to cost around $20, but I'm not sure what it would be now.
Good luck with your bug battle! It is not a fun thing no matter what you use to fight it.
BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL using Tea Tree Oil. I believe in its use, but it will burn you !!!!! Usually it needs a carrier oil such as jojoba to be safely used on skin. I know this from first hand experience. I had it on a spot of eczema on the side of my nose and forgot about it. I got in the shower and when I washed my face managed to spread it all around including my eyes. I had serious burns on my entire face and it took almost 2 weeks for my skin to return to normal. Please learn from an herbalist or someone very skilled in this area before putting Tea Tree Oil on your kids.
