My cousins girls were always coming home with lice & since she had 4 to contend with it got pricey going & buying the stuff that is made to get rid of lice so would use crisco which worked well but it took awhile to wash out. Good Luck
My daughters,I have just discovered, have lice. We have all managed to escape this pesky critter for many school years. I am overwhelmed with all the information on the internet about how to remove these guys. Does anyone have any good advice that works for the home and the hair? Thanks.
You guys are terrific! I have my shopping list, my online suggestions, my drier spinning, and my zip-lock bags ready to fill. I feel like Rambo gearing up for the attack. I will let you all know which strategy worked best for this battle. I am trying them all. It may seem like over-kill, but that is my mission. UGH! Thanks loads again for taking the time to help me.

The best thing we found was a prescription lotion called Ovide..You put it in overnight and wash it out in the morning..results were great! Mayonaise worked reasonably well too.
Heard a vinegar rinse takes care of them.
Look it up online!

I have 6 children and we had an outbreak when my 3 daughters were in ballet class. I would do the shampoo and "nit pick"....and they would get it again...turns out it was being spread at ballet class where they were all sharing brushes etc....
So here are some things I learned with 3 girls that had very long, thick hair....
You must use that little tiny comb and sit and pick out the nits ( the eggs). Use the shampoo that kills the live bugs and the eggs but then comb out the little eggs that are left. Once they are gone a little trick i did because i became paranoid about getting them again...and yes i got them too and yes i have very long hair...i would wash the hair, dry it with the hot dryer, braid it, and use hair spray....then of course remind your children under penalty of death..jk ...do not use another person's brush or any other personal grooming article.
Hope this helps. Now you know where the phrase Nitpicky comes from.

Growing up with seven kids, five younger than I, in the house lice spread like wild fire, so I became very adept to relizing what was going on if there was ever any itching in my scalp. I always self treated without the poison because I was very sensitve to it.
I would stick my head under the water faucet with the absolutely hotest water I could stand running full blast and slowly turn my head until I had the water directly touch every part of my hairline/scalp several times. Then I would comb with a very fine toothed comb as close to the scalp as I could. Finally I would blow dry my hair. I soaked all of my brushes with hot vinegar water and washed and dried all of my bedding in hot water and on high. I also made sure to grab as many siblings as possible to do the same.
I treated myself succesfully with this method several times through the years.
Hi K. ~
Just now reading your post. Lot's of good advice here. One more thing I want to add: You can pick up lice ANYWHERE your head touches where there is lice present. This includes hats that people try on in stores, even clothing that brushes over the head. Always be careful trying on things that have been on other people. Also, when you put your head back in the seat of a movie theater or other public place, YIKES! Who knows who was there before you!? I know this sounds very OCD-ish, but I carry papertowels with me to the movies and put one behind my head so I don't have contact with the seat. It's no different than the disposable paper covers used on airplane seats and dentist chairs. Definately remind your daughters NOT to share hairbrushes or hair ties with anyone! Best wishes!

I got head lice when my son was in 1st grade. My husband and I used the head lice remover shampoo, and we stayed up 1 night for hours, and he picked all of the hair nits out of my hair. From then on when I washed my hair I would also use apple cider vinegar. I would also keep my hair up. Because every time you hug someone that may have head lice you get the chance of getting it. Tell your daughter to watch how she hugs someone. Do not let her hair touch someone elses' hair.
Hello,
Many many years ago this happened to my daughters and then myself we used a lice shampoo and comb, all in all it took a few months to get rid of, I think because of my youngest who's hair was down her back and about three times as thick as my other daughters. i remember sitting for about 2 hours combing through her hair after every bath. But that was about 14 years ago so not sure if they have made any advances in lice removal since then. good luck

We battled lice for a long time, getting rid of it only to have them show up again. We finally realized that two different families we were friends with had it and weren't treating it with any regularity, and that we were recatching it from them over and over. It was soooo hard.
We did two things: sadly, quit hanging out with both of those families. Our friendships ended, because it become such a difficult issue. It was very sad, but we just couldn't keep doing the lice thing.
Secondly, we stopped using the over the counter lice products, because they didn't work, and they are incredibly toxic. They are know neuro -toxins, and absorb into the skin of the scalp, so close to the brain. No thanks.
Instead, we nit-picked every day, without fail, until they were gone for over two weeks. Every single day my husband and I would go through the scalp and hair of every kid (5!!) and pick eggs and look for live lice and pull them out. There was no short cut-- we just did it and did it and did it until we stopped finding any eggs or critters. And then we kept doing it for two solid weeks beyond that. Why? Because if any missed eggs hatched, we wanted to get the hatched critters before they got old enough to lay eggs and keep the nasty cycle going.
It worked. It was hard, but it worked. We haven't had an infestation in probably three years, since stopping the friendships with the others who had it.
Good luck!
Buy the chemical stuff from the drug store and then mid week treat with mayonnaise over night The re-treat with the chemical stuff at the one week mark and then you may want to do one more mayo treatment midweek esp. if your girls have long hair. You also need to treat everything. bag everything you can't wash for 2 weeks and vacuum everything. I would treat most if not all of the house. They are hard to see and I would treat everyone in the house to make sure. We have only dealt with this once but it was very difficult to get rid of all of the nits. You need a bright light and magnifying glass to really see them.
i went to almart bought the equate spray for linen and their hair shampoo. after spraying car seats, couches and other non washable items i then washed her bed linens and clothes on HOT water. do her hair while this is being done. then that was that. retreat in about i think the bottle said 7 days. tell the school or wheeever she goes so that they can check the kis their so that your kid dosnt just get it back.
Buy the Licemeister comb. There's no substitute. Better still, although overwhelming, there is nothing like just sitting and picking them out with your fingers. I once sat for five solid hours with my long-haired daughter picking the nits out of her hair. Get someone to do you as well. Don't take any chances. Vacuum the hell out of your house, your furniture, your car. Wash EVERYTHING. Stuffed animals and other similar things into the dryer for a half-hour and then tightly bagged in plastic for two weeks if possible.
My heart goes out to you. Take it from someone who's had it three times. It's from hell. Good luck.

We also had lice for the first time last Winter - I feel your pain! I used RID which was effective (but you MUST reshampoo after one week). However, I have since found out that many people swear by Cetaphil - the face cleanser. I was told to google "cetaphil and lice" and instructions will be provided. Apparently it take 3 weeks of applying but it is safe and non-toxic. Good luck and let us know how it works it you try the Cetaphil route.
BTW, I found online that is is only necessary to put comforters and blankets (that would require dry cleaning) in a hot dryer for 30 minutes - it did the trick. The sheets and blankets we washed and dried.

Yes. Get RID. Get enough for your entire family. Wash EVERYONE'S hair. Get RID in the spray can also. Anything you can wash (bedding, cushion covers, etc..) wash in hot water. Everything else (beds, couches, etc.) spray with RID. Vacuum your carpets really well. Lice cannot live without a host. My family went through this when my oldest was 12 months. That was fun....
Good luck to you!!!!!!
It happens and often you don't even know the source.
What we did was use traditional lice shampoo (RID or similar) and at the advice of the pediatrician, put it on, put shower caps on, and let it sit overnight. Retreat per the directions on the bottle.
We also sat the kids in the bathroom nightly for several weeks and combed through their hair. We braided my stepdaughter's hair every day. We also bought shampoo with Tea Tree oil in it as a preventative.
You can also try non-pesticide remedies like slathering the hair with mayo or conditioner to slow them down and combing them out with a nit comb. You'll have to repeat this often to catch all stages of their life cycle.
Remember to wash everything, put up toys in plastic for a bit, etc. You can buy a spray for furniture.
Remind the girls not to share combs/brushes/hair supplies and to keep their heads away from other people for a while. We finally found out that our source was a close friend of one of the kids, so they were often lounging together and sharing hair supplies.
Good luck!
I kow how you feel. I have 6 kids and have been throuugh this alot. Of course buy the shampoo, furniture spray at the store. Treat everyone in the house spray all things that cannot be washed. Sterilize brushes, combs etc. Or just buy new. Dry all stuffed animals and pillows for atleast 20 minutes. Make sure you always keep sheets on the beds as they live in the mattress. We use suave coconut shampoo and conditioner it helps and also growing up my mom used 1 cup vinegar to 1 cup water risne in our hair as a preventer. Make sure you even use the spray on amy vehicle they have been in.its very time consuming and a big pain but these are some things to help you.
My daughter had lice and all of the over the counter remedies work well. The one thing that I discovered was to buy a gerber (or any brand) baby comb. There is less space between the teeth that with the lice comb. The baby comb was a life saver to get all the nits out. Good luck. It takes time but you can get rid of them!!
Have dealt with this a number of times. Use the shampoo, etc. (only kills the live ones!). Then put Cetaphil lotion in their hair (really work it in and blend it in)at night with a shower cap (use bobby pins to keep it on)- this will suffocate the nits. The next morning, you will need to go through their hair and pull out the nits. This is a pain and time consuming. Go through the hair in sections using clips to keep back the other sections. Use your fingernails to pull the nits off the hair follicle. Do this for a week then use the shampoo again. Use the Cetaphil/shower cap every other night or so. This will work! There is also anit-nit spray - haven't tried this yet. ALso, bag all stuff animals, wash all linens and "boil" brushes, combs, etc. Good luck.
Well when the kids from my kids school used to get it, I was told if my kids got it, to use Mayo, for 2 hours, shampoo with vinager and let me tel you from hearing aboiut the moms that did have it, it works wonders.

Oh I do feel for you! I have fought this battle more than once I am sorry to say!!
I have tried almost everything. But the thing that I found worked the best is....wash with the RID the first day and then I go through their hair about 1 inch sections at a time to get as many nits and lice as I can find. It will take you forever but it is so worth it. Then for the next week about every other day we rinse with white vinegar and repeat the looking through the hair.
As far as the house...wash all bedding in HOT water and dry in a hot dryer!!!!! The heat kills them. Put away any stuff animals for about 3 weeks (put them in a garbage bag and tie it tight!!!). I buy the spray RID and spray everything in sight!!! I go through a few cans in about a weeks time. I do this about every 3-4 days. I also will vaccum everything.....mattresses, pillows, furniture.
It is a pain the you know what, but I freak out everytime this happens and go nuts to make sure they are gone.
You also need to try and find out where they got them from to that they (whoever they got them from) can be treated as well so it isn't passed back again or any further on.
Someone else mentioned Olive Oil....I have also done this and had success. But then I tend to do everything under the sun just to make myself feel better!!
Good luck!!!

I'm so sorry to hear that you and your girls have lice. I would recommend getting RID, that is the best way to get rid of them. You can find at any drugstore.

The woman that does my hair told me that using the OTC product RID is a good one. She also said, if you do not throw all stuffed animals away or at the very least bag them up in dark bags and put them in an attic area for at least a year you won't get rid of them.
My 10yr old got it last year and we had a HORRIBLE time getting rid of it. HORRIBLE. I suggest getting Licex -online is the only way to purchase it. It is hemopathic per se and it truly TRULY WORKS.. You use it as the directions say, comb out the live nits and lice with a comb..for the live ones I had alcohol squares that I would catch them in..the LICEX brings the bugs to the surface so you can get them...you need to do it. squirmy n all..but it has to be done to get rid of them. Anyway the alcohol squares kept me from touching them and they allowed me to collect em. Then I used the 2nd bottle that comes with the LICEX kit..the maintainer. With 1 application my daughter finally got clear (this was after using the conventional ways for 2wks). GOOD LUCK!!
