Life After Febrile Seizure?

So my 4 yr old is pretty sensitive and has had about 8 Febrile seizures. Good news is she hasn't had one in about a yr or so. Anyway, she is sick now and pretty miserable! She had a cold and pink eye a couple wks ago but that seems to be mostly gone. But for the past wk she has had a fever off and on and seems lethargic. She says her eyes are hurting and is not eating hardly anything. She is sleeping a lot and has thrown up a few times. She just keeps moaning. She'll start to feel better but it comes again. Yes I have taken her to the Dr. but they just said she is probably just fighting something. Of course, she was feeling ok when we went even though she had just thrown up before we left for the appt. My question is, well first off does anyone know what this might be? Anything going around? Also, if your child had Febrile seizures but they stopped, does it seem your child has a harder time fighting sicknesses? Just thinking her immune system might be weaker. Not bc of the seizures but maybe that is just how her body is. When she was born we had to stay in the hospital 2 extra dys bc her white blood cell count was high. Not sure if this could be related? Thanks!

Hi Leah,

Her immune system may be weaker from medications or from things you've had to do to prevent the seizures. I don't think the seizures are what cause a weakened immune system. I had febrile seizures. So did my oldest daughter. I was a sickly kid but my mother did every medication the doctor told her I needed. When I was old enough to think things through on my own I started building my immune system. Absorbable vitamins, supplements, chiropractic care and good nutrition and exercise. My daughter hasnt had the same problems I had because I tried to strengthen her immune system to prevent the sickness to prevent the seizures...she had few seizures over 24 months.

If you'd like more specifics about building her immune system I'll be glad to share. I believe our bodies are wonderfully resilient and can withstand a lot.

God bless,

M.

Is she responding to Tylenol and Ibuprofen? Does she perk up if you give her either one? If so, then I would think it is just a "bug." However, if she is still miserable when she has the Tylenol or Ibuprofen I would keep expressing your concern or get a second opinion. Do she have a neurologist? Our oldest daughter has epilepsy and we went through this very thing... She was actually having absent seizures (the type you cannot really see unless you are really watching closely.) She would zone out, her eyes would become fixed, and then she would be extremely sleepy and not herself. I hope/pray that you find answers! Good luck to you and your sweet girl!

I have a son who had a Febrile seizure when he was just about 3 1/2. They said to watch him closely for fevers and that by the time he was 5 he should "outgrow" it. He never did have another one but has been a healthy as a work horse ever since. Granted he gets a little bug here and there as they go through our family but he hasn't gotten any great illness anymore then his sisters.
So the good news is that she should "outgrow" them soon if that's what she really has. I also agree with Autumn's advice of seeing a neurologist. My youngest sister has epilepsy and suffers from the absent seizures as well as greater more harmful seizures. If you think she is more lethargic then she would be from a "bug" I would have her seen by a specialist.
Good luck and hope you get her back to health soon!

If she had a cold and now is lethargic, fever, eyes hurt, upset stomach it sounds like she has a sinus infection. Extra mucus can do a number to your stomach. Another thing headache, upset stomach and fever can also be strep and for the record my oldest has never had the nasty throat or sore feeling throat with strep. Did they test her? I would have asked but that's just cause I know my kiddo does not get a sore throat with it.
Or it could be what my youngest has right now off and on since Tuesday he has been pukey off and on, fever one minute fine the next, tired one day fine the next, and has little appetite but checks out fine I know a few other kids that have had this recently. I'd be concerned if her cold symptoms never went completely away before the fever and lethargy started cause she could have gotten a secondary infection from the cold.

I would take her back to the doctor, what is strange to me is the eyes hurting? Is she sensitive to light? Someone suggested sinus infection- if so, do they give anything for that? Did they even test for flu or strep throat? Quick and easy tests so I would ask just to rule them out.
