My oldest has had a dry cough for about 6wks now. Started middle of march and had no cold symptoms with it. Had a fever the week before for a day and was still on antibiotics for sinusitis when the cough started. Brought her to dr 2 and 1/2 wks after cough started dr checked her out and said looked like she was just getting over a cold. Just to wait sometimes cough can last 2-3 wks. So another 2 and 1/2wks later, brought her in again, this time said allergies. Started her on zyrtec. Still no results a wk and 1/2 later. Still coughing off and on. And behavior has been pretty bad since about 3rd day on meds. Moodier than normal. Dr wants me to increase dosage and keep her on it for another 2 wks or so. Any moms or dads have any experience with lingering coughs and allergies? And what my next step should be? just worried about increasing dosage if the zyrtec could be causing these behavioral side effects. Cough sounds dry and isn't ll day, just sporadically. Some days worse than others. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Coughing asthma or post nasal drip.

I'm thinking asthma. Either allergy-induced or from having a cold. Either way, she sounds like she is miserable. Does she have an inhaler or nebulizer?

If you are not comfortable with the doctor, it is certainly ok to get a 2nd opinion elsewhere. I see you are in the midwest like me- and we have whooping cough going around like crazy here. The cough tends to linger for a long time. I don't know about behavior and zyrtec- could it be possible that it is making her tired and then acting out? Hope that helps.

I was going to suggest to check her for asthma. My son coughs his lungs up if he doesn't get his medicine, when he has his asthma cough. Good luck.

When my daughter gets that, it's asthma related. It doesn't happen often, but when she starts the cough, we start the inhalers. It goes away pretty quickly. Other than that, the only other thing we experienced with that was a bout of strep.

Hope your baby gets better soon!

Hi there, my 22 month old had a cough for about 3 months and I just kept hearing it"s a virus it's a virus, finally the last doc I saw told me she could have a post nasal drip problem and suggested i give her 1tsp of claritin before bed. She said it could take up to 2 weeks to kick in, but by day 4 her cough was almost all gone. Her cough was like your child's, every now and then, but her chest sounded horrible (rumbling, wheezing) although they kept reasurring me that her lungs were clear and that it was an upper respiratory infection(virus). I stopped the claritin once all the noise in her chest went away. Just last week she started getting that congested sound again and so i put her back on it and 2 days later it was gone. I would try claritin, my baby didn't have any side effects what so ever on it. :)
