personally. My mom had high liver enzymes with a blood pressure medication she was on...she lost weight - got off the blood pressure meds and died of pancreatic cancer.

If your liver enzymes are high - it could mean liver damage. Your AST should not be over 40 and ALT should not be over 56. However, you need to know that high liver enzymes can be muscle damage instead of liver damage.

They may do a sonogram of your liver, pancreas and kidneys to see if you have fatty deposits or damage. Are you recovering from Hepatitis? That can cause abnormal numbers as well.

Are you on statins?? Statins can cause liver damage...sorry...

Ask the doctor what he/she wants to do. Find out if they need further blood tests or a sonogram of your liver, pancreas and kidneys.

Good luck!

This happened to me once. Wasn't on meds at all at the time. Several months later it was rechecked and the numbers were "normal". I'd try to switch the medication if they suspect it and retest in 3-6 months. Good luck, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Do you take a multi-vitamin with iron? Several years ago I took a multi vitamin, and because I'm a vegetarian, I made sure it had iron since I was worried about lacking in that. When I went for a check up, my liver enzymes were high due to too much iron.

Hopefully they look at everything specific to you, and can adjust your meds if that's the problem. For me it was just stopping the vitamin! Good luck- hopefully it turns out to be minor and an easy adjustment!

I've had elevated liver enzymes my entire life.

One time, when I was about 28-29, the doctor accused me of being an alcoholic, and so did his nurse. And I sat there saying, no, I don't drink. BUT....when I was in high school, yes I did do a lot of binge drinking, and got really, really sick and passed out a few times at concerts....fast foward to an Accupuncture MD that I visit now, and she said it happens all the time in diagnosing problems with the liver, that people think of only what is happening at that moment in their lives when they are experiencing the problem. With your liver, you need to consider the past several years of history, not just this one med.

Read up on your medication. I'm one 1 that requires me to have blood work done every 10 weeks to check my liver enzymes. If you are aware that you have high liver enzymes then your doctor has done blood work with you. He/she should have also discussed the results with you and set a plan of action. If not then give the office a call and talk about it.

You need to get off that medicine. Go to the doc and figure out which one it is. It's important.

I have had high liver enzymes since 2000. And I mean in the hundreds sky high numbers. No alcohol at all. I had a liver biopsy, tested negative for Hep C, etc. I had my blood drawn every week for about 7 weeks to retest.

As it turns out, I have Sarcoidosis and it can impact any organ and that appeared to be the cause. To this day, my enzyme readings are still high, just not as high as back in 2000. Back then, even when I was taken off all medication (i.e. birth control pills, OTC, migrain meds) it remained high. Right now the results are being monitored to make sure that they are not getting higher. And yes, a certain medication could be the culprit.
