Hi,

We are going to be giving our daughter a dog for her high school graduation. I believe this is my husbands way of keeping her home for college.LOL! My daughter would like a beagle. Does anyone know of a good breeder? Since we have cats and I have a family daycare I am looking for a puppy so it can be raised around the cats and small children. We have done a lot of reserch and it seems like the perfect dog for us. I looked into adoption when I was getting my cat and there were so many rules. Because of the daycare I was even told I could not have a kitten and another place told me I would need to adopt 2. Needless to say I ended up at a pet store so I could get a kitten. Is it the same to adopt dogs? I have nothing against adopting if it is possible. Thank-you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We got our puppy and she's so cute!!!! We ended up going to Paws in Chicago. We got a 5 month old terrier and her name is Squeak. She not a beagle but we fell in love with her as soon as we saw her. Paws staff was great. No crazy questions or waiting to adopt her. It was a wonderful experience!

Please look into adoption. We have adopted 2 dogs and bought one at a breeder. It is basically the same. I Do Not recommend a puppy in a day care situation. It is just like having a baby again. They have to go out every 2hrs even at night. Potty training takes 4-6 months. I would get a 1+ old dog that has been potty trained and socialized. These dog are really loyal. Puppies can not be around young children they bite with razor sharp little teeth and they think it is playing. Please look into this http://picsbycindy.com/marion_grant_dogs.htm there are some beagle mixes and terriers are great with little kids too. They will have to put down the dogs that do not get adopted because the shelter has to close. Also there is a glut of pets in shelters with many of the home foreclosures people can not rent with them. Best wishes

I just received this e-mail about a dog shelter that is closing. If the dogs are not adopted by time they close (early June) the dogs will be euthanized. I looked at the site and they do have beagles. Something to think about !

Good luck!

Hi,

I actually have two beagles of my own and we got them from a rescue. I would highly reccommend this organization. I got both of my girls through them. It is called Beagle Rescue Education and Welfare. They are on line and they have tons of dogs. You may have to wait a while for a young puppy, but if you are not able to find one there, there are other sites available. Our beagles are great. They can get a little noisy, but we love them. Good luck with whatever choice you make. Remember the best thing you can do is rescue a dog.

Because of breeders, pet stores and irresponsible owners, thousands of dogs are killed every year because there aren't enough homes for them. What a great thing it would be to adopt a young dog and save a life for your daughter's graduation. Have you ever had a puppy? I love dogs but I really hate puppies. They chew, pee, poop, chew, whine, chew etc. Can you tell I don't like puppies? It's so nice to get a dog that already has been trained and is in need of a home. Most of these dogs for adoption have lived with cats -- and you can always ask if they get along with them. I know it seems like adoption agencies have a lot of rules, but it's because they truly care where their dogs are going, unlike pet stores and breeders, who just want your money. Almost Home Foundation is a wonderful pet rescue group. (I have two cats and two dogs from them.) I would also check out (google it) if there are any beagle rescue organizations. There are so many purebreds looking for good homes. If you go to a pet store you'll get a sickly puppy mill dog and you'll be supporting that industry. Please don't do it. Good luck! And remember, you daughter won't be living with you for too many more years (I have a 20-year-old) so the dog will essentially be yours.
