My son has a dark brown mole on his hand that seems to have cropped up from nowhere. I do not remeber him having this before. He has had it for a few months, and I feel like I need to have it checked out.
Also, I have a lighter, strange sort of spot on the back of my leg close to where it bends, behind my knee. I think it is skin cancer. It was smaller before, and I've had it for a couple of years, just haven't done anything about it.
Anyone know who I should see about these things. I would like whoever it is to be in Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette, Winnetka, Kenilworth, etc.
Let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions.
Thank you.
I decided to make an appointment with one of the great recommendations of dermatologists I received from all of you(hard to choose). We have a follow-up appointment scheduled. I will have the age spot removed from my leg... I'm 33, so go figure!, and the cysts on my head(genetic) I will have surgery to remove, one at a time. My son will have a sample taken from the mole on his hand, and then we'll go from there. No cancer, and that's good. Thank you all for your help.

Hi Gretchen:)
As for your son...kids get new moles all of the time...
they are not usually just born with them. They become more decorated as they get older. I know my kids (especially my 9 year old) has all of a sudden become quite covered with many new moles.
Go to Dr. Amy Brodsky...She will check you out. And your son.
She is in the Glen. She has seen me when I was "SURE" I had skin cancer. It was just a new mole. She got me in right away, took it off right a way. Her office staff is wonderful, very educational, when they saw it, they explained why of course I thought it was skin cancer, but why they were pretty certain it was not, and I could relax until the results came back:)
also, she has seen my husband for a skin cancer screening.
She sees my daughter, who is your oldest daughter's age :) for a skin condition (she claims to have a special interest in pediatrics)...I am not sure if it is just an interest or advanced training. I just know I really like her.
Her staff is really nice, you can get in the same week.

Well, our dermatologist is in Elmhurst. Her name is Lori Shelnitz and she's really good. Her office is well managed (read: on time) and Dr. Shelnitz is the best. She actually diagnosed my brother's thyroid problem (b/c of his thinning hair) after 3 other docs missed it! She specializes in skin cancer, too.

Looks like you have plenty of referrals - just wanted to let you know that I asked my GP about a mole I was concerned about and she told me to always remember ABC - asymetry, borders and consistency(color) - If a mole is asymetrical (strange shape) or has ragged borders or is differently colored - light brown in one area, darker in the other - then it is cause for concern.
You may also want to consider Dr. Julie Goldberg. She is located in Northbrook on Waukegan Road, just off the Eden's Spur. ###-###-####) Professional, friendly. I was able to get an appointment easily, and when I went in for the consultation, that same day she removed the mole I had on my head for over 10 years. I recommend her to everyone!
