Looking for a Good OB/GYN in Athens

I am new to the Athens area and I need an OB/GYN. I am trying to get pregnant and would like to establish a relationship with a doctor before I become pregnant. I prefer female doctors. I'd like to deliver at St. Mary's. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Please include as much detail as you can as to why you recommend the doctor. It is very hard to choose someone when you are new to the area and have no referrals from friends or family. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi J., welcome to Athens- I hope you will find it welcoming! I know of 3 good male OB/GYN's but am not familiar with any female. I just had twins and was very pleased with Dr. Elder (male). I had been going to Dr. Cary Perry as my GYN and will continue with her now that Dr. Elder has released me- Dr. Perry is fabulous! However, the practice she is now with, Athens Women's Clinic, does only GYN practice. Good luck!

Oh, and should you need any "help" from a specialist, I saw Dr. Scott Slayden in Lawrenceville, wonderful doctor!!! F.

I go to Classic City OB/GYN. I've only had one appt. and I am sold. They are very open minded, professional and thorough. They do a complete medical history and diagnostic and not just the cursory standard quesionairre. They are willing to discuss natural and homeopathic options and make you feel completely comfortable.

Hi J. and welcome to Athens. I would highly recommend Athens OB/Gyn, in particular, Dr. Ruth Cline. We recently had our first baby girl and had fertility issues prior to her conception (we actually worked with Georgia Reproductive Specialists in Atlanta to become pregnant but all prenatal care was with Athens Ob/Gyn). Dr. Cline was very knowledgeable about our particular fertility issue, was attentive to my high risk status, and was very supportive throughout my pregnancy. The only negative (in my opinion) was that the practice requires that each patient sees each of the physicians (I believe there are 6 total, one other female and the rest are males) during your pregnancy so that you will have a relationship with each because whoever is on call will deliver your baby. However, I believe this is a pretty standard practice with most ob/gyn offices in the area. I had to have a c-section so I was able to schedule with Dr. Cline and saw her for most of my appointments. The practice delivers at St Marys as well. Good luck to you!

I live in Athens and go to the Women's Center of Athens on King. The doctors there service St. Mary's and Athens Regional, so you can state where you want to deliver. They have three female doctors and one male. I prefer Melissa Halbach. She is very down to earth and sweet.

We have a 4 year old son, who we became pregnant with after one month of trying. Now I am 6 months pregnant with my second but after 2½ years of trying. Melissa Halbach and Natalie, the Nurse Practitioner, worked with us for over a year to get pregnant without having to go to a fertility clinic. On our last chance without going to the clinic, I got pregnant.

They are so sweet and understanding of every aspect and frusturation you go through. I highly recommend this office.

Hi J.,
Welcome to Athens. I go to Women's Healthcare and see Dr. Stephanie Allen. I have also seen the other doctors in with her and they are very personable. Dr. Allen was wonderful to me while I was pregnant. I was high risk and she made sure i was well take care of during my pregnancy and afterwards when thyroid issues came up.
She also sent me to Dr. Lisa Hasty in Atlanta to help monitor my pragnancy the first three months. I had had three miscarriages prior to this.
I've also heard great things about Dr. Grogin(sp?) He is male and I know you're looking for female. Good luck with everything.
Kathy
