Looking for a Really Good Vaccum

I am in desperate need of a really good vaccum cleaner. I have a 4 yr old and 2 yr old, 3 indoor cats plus myself, my husband and my brother in-law. Our house is mostly carpet, with the hope of putting hard wood floors in soon. I vaccum several times a day and I feel like it does nothing. Our old house was all hard wood and we never had a problem with any guests having allergic reactions to our cats, I can tell you how many times in the 7months we have been in our new house that guests have had to leave or take medicine to combat their cat allergies. It is making me feel like a terrible house keeper and is so frustrating. I am looking at the dyson but really wanted to know if any of you had any input, I am willing to spend some cash on this. I want my family and my guests to fell comfortable in my home with out needing medication. I thank all of you for your help.

So What Happened?

Thank you all of you so much for taking the time to share with me. I have been able to narrow down my vacuum search to a few, I think I am going with the Dyson, now I have to decide on which model. Thank you all of you so much. This board is such a wonderful help.

Don't get a dyson! Very expensive and I have had mine in for repairs twice and it's only 3 years old. Warranty's out on it so Dyson(company) says there's nothing they can do. Won't buy another one.

I have to say I LOVE my dyson. I would highly suggested it. It is worth the extra money. We have 2 dogs, 2 kids and lots of carpet and it really does the job and is so easy to use. It has a lifetime warrenty on the fliter, so you can't go wrong. We have the one with all the attachments that is great if you have hard wood, or stairs. You can even use it to clean your mattress. Also, my mom has a cat, and I am allergic. So when I come she vacums with her Dyson and it does not bother me at all when I am there. She was the one who got me turned on to Dysons. Good Luck!!

I honestly think the very best vacuum in the workd it the Oreck XL. It is expensive but I absolutely LOVE it. Seriously, vacuuming is a pleasure. It only weighs 8 pounds and works like charm. Its the vacuum commercial with the guy holding a bowling ball. Mine also came with a mini-canister that is great for corners and smaller areas. I love it!

Hello,

Trust me, I know how frustrating it can be to have a vaccuum that doesn't seem to work, especially with pet hair, no matter how many times you vaccuum. My husband and I got the Oreck XL vaccuum cleaner about 3 1/2 years ago as a wedding gift from his parents and we love it. His parents have one too and it's great for picking up pet hair (they have a sheltie and we used to have a long-haired dog as well as a cat) as well as everything else, and what I really love about it, is that it is so light and easy to carry up the stairs (only 10 pounds). Plus the one we got also came with a smaller vaccuum with attachments for cleaning off couches and getting into corners and behind things. I believe this vaccuum set cost somewhere in the $300-$400 range, and like I said it was a gift, but I think that cost would be worth it. Because every other vaccuum that I or my family has had in the past that we paid not even $100 for has not worked well at all, not lasted long, and not done a good job. I know there is an Oreck vaccuum store in Cudahy (I'm not sure where you live), but you can probably also get them online...they don't sell them in regular stores as far as I know. Well, I hope that helps. Good luck!

We purchased a Lindhaus at Richfield Vaccums a few years ago because we have two cats and my husband is allergic. I was amazed at how well it cleaned compared to my Dirt Devil which never seemed to get the cat hairs up. It's a Hepa vaccum which means it contains the allergens after they are sucked. It wasn't cheap, around $700, but it's supposed to last 30 years. I'm very happy with it and glad we made the investment.

I really love my Dyson! We have a cat, it picks up all that hair plus dust. We got it before our baby was born and it was one of the best purchases we have ever made! It's amazing what that thing will pick up!

Oreck vacuums are great and they even give you a 30 day guarantee, so if you don't love it they will take it back no problem.

Hi D.,
My husband is allergic to cats, and we have 3 indoor cats :) We have a Kenmore Progressive Intuition beltless canister vac with a hepa filter. I vacuumed 2-3 times a week when we had carpeting, more if possible and it helped very much. We had read that it was better, and cheaper than the Dyson. Ours is close to 3 or 4 years old now and we have hard wood floors, it does the trick on them too!
Hope that helps!

PLEASE listen to me on this one... I managed a Vacuum cleaner shop for six years and I stil work there on ocassion. The Dyson is not what it seems it is. The Dyson is the number one vacuum that is brought in for repair and the parts are not cheap. I honestly think you should look at a SEBO vacuum. The filtration is the best there is and the quality and convience is amazing. Please let me know if you want anymore info..where to buy it, brochures...anything just let me know. I should also tell you that the SEBO is not cheap but with the warranty and quality you get it's well worth it. M.

I have the purple animal dyson and love it. I vaccume alot as I run a home daycare and it amazes me everytime I vaccume the stuff it pull out of my carpet. I have a cocker spaniel and a black medium haired cat. I am allergic to my dog. I have had to take less allergy meds since we bought the dyson.

I TOTALLY agree with the Dyson advice. They are spendy but worth it. Especially with pets the DC 14 is the best (We have 2 Minature American Eskimos!!!). The first few days we had the new vaccum, we vaccumed non-stop! At some point it seems unbelieveable (and disgusting) that all of that was in your carpet!

Good luck and appy cleaning!

I LOVE my dyson. Its easy to clean. Great to use and now I'm considering purchasing the new hand-held version that's coming out. Its worth the money if you have it to spend.
