I have a 27 month old son who insists I sing Row, Row, Row your boat about 100 times before he will go to sleep. Its his favorite nursery rhyme obviously. Right now he has a little toy cell phone that records for about 10 seconds so I have recorded the first verse on this and he can go to bed with it and play it whenever he needs to hear my voice, but the problem with this is that he can easily delete the recording, so I have to redo it everyday sometimes more. I am looking to get a recorder that he can take to bed and listen to without deleting everything on it and I would like to be able to record a few things on it. I havn't seen one on the internet that would work, has anyone else tried one and found that it works.
I was at babys r us over the weekend and I finally found my answer. Playskool makes an MP3 player for infants and toddlers, and it has pre-recorded songs on it and you can also add songs just like a real MP3 player and you can also record your voice. It store up to 128 mb. I had never seen this before but so far it is great. I had tried the music card idea, but after a couple weeks of him opening and shutting it and sleeping with it, it got broke and it would start going off when he was sleeping and it would wake him up. I used my computer to record myself singing my daughter's favorite songs on a CD. I pop it in the CD player and she can sing to her heart's content without bugging me :)
You have a computer, most have a voice recorder in them. Use it to make a CD and put a little CD player on his dresser and play that at night for him. If you want him to be able to play it himself, there is kids CD players available I am sure. All you need is a blank CD and a mic.
We found a stuffed animal that you can record on. My daughter sleeps with it everynight and she just has to push the hand to hear my voice. We found ours during Christmas, but I am sure Walmart or a toy store has them all year round. Good luck!
Jamie had a great idea about recording it with the aide of the computer. Check your local toy store and you'll find more recorders for kids as well. If you've got any decent thrift stores in the area, check them out as well! A couple years ago, I got a tape recorder/player and mic for less then a dollar! :) My daughters LOVE to play with it and hear their own voice, put on little "shows" with singing and dancing, and I can record messages for them as well!
There are two excellent toys you should check out from the "Parent's" line of toys carried at most Targets; The Parent's baby cellphone and the Parent's Karaoke microphone.
The cellphone looks and folds shut like a real cell, and comes in many styles and designs to fit your child's personality. It has a 30 second voice record button so you can leave a "custom" message along with several pre-recorded messages. After the child dials a number or closes the cell phone, it will ring on its own after a few seconds and randomly play back one of the prerecorded messages, including the personalized message. The child can also play back the personalized message as many times as they want. And the message can be easily changed.
The Karaoke mic has 10 pre-recorded toddler tunes. No lyrics though. You have to supply that. Row Row..is one of the 10 songs including other familiar kid tunes like London Bridge, Old McDonald etc. It also has a feature so the child can sing with a pre-recorded tune and I think they can tape themselves as they're doing it. I know they can amplify their voice with the tune for sure.. We have both, but the mic's been missing for a while. I think it's at grandma's, otherwise I'd check. Perhaps check on-line and see if a product description can confirm??
My kids love all of these things to pieces...even my oldest still loves them (he's going to be 7).

If you have a digital camera that has a "movie" option on it, you can hit record and sing the song. Then you can upload it to your computer, and then make a cd, and putting the file on the cd over and over again, then burn the cd and it will play in a cd player
I had a small one that I used in college. I also remember using it when I first heard my baby's heartbeat. I think I just found mine at Radio Shack or Best Buy. I think there's a way to make the tape permananent - maybe by pushing in the corner tabs??? I forget. I would ask one of the sales people about that.
I am wondering if he likes to touch the recorder? Maybe it's a tactile thing too? Hallmark makes cards that you can record a message. Why not pick up a few, record your messages or song, paste a family picture on the card, cover it up with clear contact paper and let him play with it. It should last as long as this obsession. Have you tried Build a Bear? They have something that you can record then put in the bear's (or other animal's) paw... You could do all 4 paws with different parts of the song if it's a short recording... ? With a Build a Bear he could pick out the Animal and go back to the sound proof room to record with you and you guys could make a really special memory that he could keep forever. This would be a great addition to the cd idea cuz the cd could passivley put him to sleep, but the with the animal he could actively play the song during other times of the day. may get a bit pricy though.... But depending on how much he'd like it, it may be worth it.
