M.,
I had a great sling from this website - www.kangarookorner.com - they have all types of different carriers that may help you. Also, check out "patapum" carriers - they can be worn front or back.
Good luck!

My son is almost 8 months now and is outgrowing the baby bjorn. I'm trying to get some advice on another baby carrier that is comfortable and not too bulky. I'm planning on taking him on the el with me to go to daycare near my job. I don't want to take a stroller and think that a baby carrier might be my best option.

Hi M. --
I commuted for 2 years with my first child and used an assortment of gear to manage it. I now have twin infants and have had to give up and drive them downtown to day care and work. But, when Josh was little, I had great luck with a hip carrier made by MAWS. At the time, I'd never seen anything like it, one strap went around my waist, attached to a small nylon seat that was attached to a shoulder strap. Josh was very comfortable in it and it was compact and easy to use. I've now seen similar items made by other manufacturers at Target and the Right Start. Since the twins were born, I've discovered a really wonderful soft carrier that allows me to put one of the babies in front, back or on my hip. The "generic" name for this style of carrier is My Tie or Asian Style carrier.....I ordered one online for about $35 from a local woman who custom makes them, allowing you to choose your fabric. Check out rosiebaby.com.
Finally, I always wanted to try something I saw too late to be worth the money for me. Kelty (I think) makes a frame backpack carrier with pop-down wheels that allows you to push it like a stroller when it's convenient, then put him on your back when you need to. It runs about 150 and seems ideal for commuting.
Good luck! Commuting with your kids is tough, but really worth it. You get a lot of extra time with them you would otherwise miss out on.
Hi there, I was thinking of a Maya wrap or Maya sling. Ebay for sure or maybe www.chicagocraigslist.com. I used one but sold it on ebay.
good luck, C. :)
Hi M.,
I recently flew to Pennsylvania, and was looking for the same features in a carrier. I finally bought the Ultra EZ Carrier by One step Ahead (http://www.onestepahead.com/product/27213/751/117.html) I used a coupon and got it for less than $22. My baby is close to 8 months old, and I have been using it for strolls and trips to the stores after that trip. He's very active as well, and won't stay in one place, hence why the carrier is extra useful for me.
Hope this helps,
Susan
