Looking for Books That Are Not Scary and Nice for My Six Year Old

Hi moms/dads. I have a six year old that is really getting hooked into reading. I home school him and he is in the 2nd grade and reads really well. Most books that we have are soft readers but he needs something more but I find that the books that I look at that are thicker in length are not something I would like him to be reading. I don't like witchcraft stuff or anything that could be scary or books that have characters that are just ugly to each other. Happy books would be nice :)
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

My 8yo son is absolutely loving and adoring the Percy Jackson books. Greek Mythology in modern times is the real bent to it. They're hilariously funny, even during the action parts (the title character is narrating 1st person, so his take on things keeps thing light, even in the middle of battling monsters... and there are quite a few comic relief type characters that has had kiddo laughing so hard that he cries). We actually used these books in conjunction with studying Ancient Greece. (also HS'ing).

How about some older classics like Black Beauty, or Misty of Chincoteague, or even The Bobbsey Twins?

You may want to check out "The Magic Tree House" series. There's also the "Baily School Kids", which are funny stories.

What about some of the classics - "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", "Around the World in 80 Days", "Black Beauty". These come in a younger format called the great illustrated classics.

I always like to recommend Encyclopedia Brown. Of course, they are short stories, but they challenge you to "figure it out" and get you working on critical thinking skills. A wonderful supplement for the homeschooler (which is also me!)

Anything by Beverly Cleary is great, although he may not appreciate stories about Ramona...she has lots of other wonderful other stories.

I also love the classics, and think they have great value even at a young age...just choose based on what he may be interested in. Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Around the World in 80 Days, White Fang, Arabian Nights, etc.

I'd have so many more recommendations for you, but they are more tailored towards girls.

My 2nd grader, also a great reader, loves the Magic Tree House Books, so I second the previous responder's answer.

My son is a very good reader too and he loves the Stink books by Megan McDonald. It is about a second grader and little adventures he has. They are chapter books but really big font and easy to read and they're kind of funny. My son loves them.

How about the Hardy Boys series? My older daughter loved the Nancy Drew series at that age, also. If those are a bit too much of a challenge, how about Roald Dahl's books (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, The Twits, etc)? My younger daughter (1st grade) adores the Magic Treehouse series.

Boxcar Children, Magic Tree House, Junie B. Jones...would all be good starts! Check out his next book fair at school or just peruse the series sections at the bookstore or library.
