Looking for Dental Insurance

My husband and I don't have dental insurance, and just found out my 3 year old son is going to need work(non-emergency) that will cost us more than $3,000. Is there any good individual or family dental insurance we could get that will make a difference in this? I will appreciate any suggestions.

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

My husband is a broker for life, health, and dental insurance. He rarely recommends dental insurance for his clients because it is usually not worth the expense. Everyone's situation is different so it is probably worth talking to an insurance broker, but don't expect to save a lot. If you want, you can call him - his business is Advantage Brokers of Colorado. ###-###-####

Some dental plans do not cover pre-existing conditions. There are others that do not cover any major expenses the first year.

My husband did say that quite often you can negotiate the cost with your dentist (this is very common for orthodontics). Dentists do not like dealing with insurance companies and they may be willing to lower their cost. As a last resort, almost all dentists do offer payment plans with 0% interest.

Hope that helps!

J.

My husband is a dentist & is wondering what exactly is requiring $3K worth of work - have you considered getting a second opinion? He is really curious what is needing this much at this age? Most insurance companies will max out at $1000 to $1500 as it is. Check out Delta Dental, but not sure if they have individual plans.

I know of a dental clinic that does dental work I believe on a scale according to income. But you can not have dental insurance to qualify. A friend of mine is a dentist at this clinic and she is very good. I will get the information and get back to you. It might take a few days but I will ask her.

We don't have insurance, either, but if you get it, make sure the work won't be considered a pre-existing condition, and therefore, not covered.
