Looking for Good School to Teach Sign Language for Preschoolers

My son was recently diagnosed with mild/moderate hearing loss and also underwent an MRI that shows a malformation of his inner ear that is typically associated with progressive hearing loss ending in deafness. Our son already has some pretty major speech delays and we have him in speech therapy but we would also like to get him into a preschool age sign language (real sign language) class as soon as possible. If you have any recommendations on where we can find this sort of thing, please let me know! This is all so new to us. The dr.'s so far have not been good about suggesting where to go etc... We are at a complete loss but want to react as quickly as possible to help our son learn while he is still able to hear. Thank you!

What can I do next?

You should definitely contact your local school district. They are required to offer different services to all children who qualify - different therapies and classes. Typically, these services are very thorough and of good quality. And, since your son is 3, you should have no problem getting him started immediately.

Good luck! C.

I am sorry to hear about the problems your son is having!! I am an in home childcare provider, and relatively fluent in ASL. I served a volunteer mission for my church working exclusively with the deaf. I will be offering a preschool program in which I inted to teach signs. I would be much more vigilant about it with a child who needed it, and am seriously looking into caring for a deaf child (if I could find one) in order to fully immerse my own children in the language. I absolutely love ASL and kids, and would be happy to learn more of your specific desires, and work with you if you were interested. I live in Corinth, so it would be a bit of a drive, but if I could help feel free to let me know.

Hi my name is S. H.. I do not know if you are adamant about a school, but we have a girl in our church who is exceptional at signing. I could sure ask her to teach your son if you are interested in one on one learning. We have a deaf gentleman in our church and she does the siging ever service for him. Let me know and I can get in touch with her.

Best of Luck and you will be in my prayers,
S.

You should check with your local school district. They should be able to point you to the right school. I know Mckinney offers a program for hearing and speech delay for preschoolers, if they qualify. Sounds like your son would easily. Check with the Special Education department in your district. I know Plano offers a school for the hearing impaired through their district as well. Best of luck.

You need to contact the Callier Center. They are part of UTD dallas and they have a 2 locations. They offer speech intensive preschool and teach sign language. I'm an occupational therapy student and one of my professors works there and works with kids with hearing impairments. I also have a child with communication delay and looked into sending him there at one point. It is a GREAT place!
