Looking for Health Insurance

Is there any type of a health insurance for families of self employed people. I had great insurance through my company, but I quit to stay home with my baby. COBRA is quite expensive, so that's not an option. We're looking for something affordable. My husband and I never go to the doctor, rarely get sick, but we are looking primarily because of our daughter.

What can I do next?

I would contact the lady that responed here from NASE Mega life and health, they have a great plan for self employed families and cater to only them. My husband and I were in the same boat, and we were struggling to find health insurance that would be simliar if you were working for a normal company we checked all of the different ones including Blue Cross Unicare etc....
We are a family of 3 I have a 3 year old son. We are currently paying $344 per month and it covers all of us for everything. We have a 3000 decutible which is better then most for this price. You accumulate points of 500 a year so your daughters doctors visits would all be covered at no cost to you, and if you need to go, yours would be as well since you don't go that often to the doctor. Almost every doctor is covered under the plan so I didn't need to switch doctors either. My only complaint is is does NOT include maternity benefits, but no other insurance does either, but if thats not an issue with you, you will be fine on everything else. I would highly recomend checking them out before you start calling around the others because this is really the best I found so far after researching and searching for several months. If you have any questions just let me know.

M.,
We've been self employed for 6 yrs. and I have been with quite a few health insurance companies. I would stay away from NASE. Period. We were with them for 4 months and I never spent so much money (out of pocket) with a health insurance company. They DO NOT PAY for your childs initial appts - when she gets her shots, etc - but will cover the immunization, and it was tough for my doctor to get paid on the immunization part. I know that this was VERY important for us since I have 2 children under 3 at the time. My child's 3 yr check up endep up costing us around $400 out of pocket- because they DID NOT cover it. Plus, the policy I had, my rep told me that after 30k of medical bills out of pocket, they (MEGA) would cover 100% - NOT TRUE. You cover 100%....if you choose them be VERY careful and READ your policy and get in touch with the INSURANCE company to ask questions, instead of the rep from NASE. I filed a complaint with NASE for selling a product that did not exist. AND you pay a monthly fee to be associated with them...which is billed in with the rate you pay. For a little more money, you will be ahead since your out of pocket will be very low in comparison. Especially since your girl will be getting her shots throughout the yr. That is just my experience and I've been with 3policy's with different companies. I am finally with Pacificare, pay $480 for a family of 4, with, 3k deductible, copay $45-and they have been great for the past year. Very reasonable priced and they cover immunization and the appts for the kids. If you would like the person I used to research, let me know, I'll pass along the info to you.
Take care and good luck.

Check out Unicare. My husband has insurance through his job but to add myself and daughter it's very expensive so we have an individual plan through Unicare and it's very affordable. Feel free to email me if you have further questions.

I whole heartedly agree with Elaine L.!!! Stay FAR AWAY from NASE!!! I used them for about a year and it was a nightmare! My "insurance" rep was horrible...he was no insurance rep, he was just a SALESMAN trying to get any business! Please look elsewhere for you and your family! I now am on a good policy with my husband. Good luck!

Hi M.:

Cobra is definitely expensive. But we all need health insurance if we can afford it. I am a health insurance broker for individuals and group plan for 12 years. If you would provide the birth date of each one of your family members and your home zip code, I can research for you.
To it more meaningful for you, I would ask you what kind of health plan are you using right now. Do you want an office copay, or a drug card? Or just the bottomline indemnity health plan. All these can change your premium drastically.
My business phone no. is ###-###-####. You are welcomed to call me and discuss. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help you.

When my hubby was self-employed we had Unicare. It is the same great quality as any insurance you would get when working with a company. You can even go to their website (www.unicare.com) and get a quote based on lots of questions pertaining to your needs (deductible, co-pays, percription needs, monthly cost, etc.). We had used other companies before this and were never happy- Unicare was great!

Hi M.

Since I became an at-home mom in 2000, we've been using Unicare. They're rates are the lowest that you will find (I check around every year, and have yet to find a company that can beat their rates). www.unicare.com

When my son had no health insurance because my ex lost his job & insurance coverage, I got him temporary insurance thru Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. They also have regular health insurance (besides the temp coverage) for individuals & families. I wanted to use a company that was reputable & that doctors would actually accept...glad to report that I never had to use the insurance :) The one time I talked to them on the phone, they were extremely pleasant & very helpful :)

Health Insurance is very expensive. I do not know what the best plan out there is. For me and my family I have opted to take the proactive approach for our health and add alternative health and wellness products. I have been drinking a nutritional beverage for about 6 months and so far it has helped to lower my cholestereol 76 points, given me much needed energy & I have not been sick with cold/flu since starting on it!
If I understood the Presidents proposal on health care...a lot more of us will be paying for our own health insurance in the near future. My plan is to NOT get sick!
