I live overseas but will be returning home to have my 5th child. I would love to have a midwife attended homebirth or birth center birth but unfortunately I am high risk this time around. I am looking for an OB/OB practice that is natural childbirth friendly, especially for a mom with high blood pressure. Also, what hospitals in the area are natural childbirth friendly, even fr high-risk moms. Rooming in is important to me. Can you recommend any doulas in the area? Basically anything you can tell me is helpful. I've heard good things abour Grandview, Pennsy, and Montgomery Hospital. I will arrive home at 31 weeks and would like to already have appt's set up. Thanks for your help!

So What Happened?

Thanks for your replies! I really appreciated them all. I have decided to go with Penn OB/GYN and deliver at Pennsylvania Hospital. Grandiew looks great but I have already spoken to a dr at Penn and so will stick with them. Now my quest is on to find a doula!

The Birth Center in Bryn Mawr is amazing. They are right across the street from Bryn Mawr Hospital so you can have your birth at either the Birth Center or the hospital and the midwife will stay with you the whole time. I had two of my babies there (after having my oldest at Lankenau Hospital) and cannot say enough good things about the experience. They are just the best.

I just gave birth to my second son at Montgomery Hospital on October of last year, and the staff is awesome. I come from giving birth to my first son at Mercy Suburban Hospital and We, my husband and I, did not like it a bit. The nurses were not diligent and the room was not comfortable. Likewise, my OB/Gyn works in Montgomery and I was lucky enough to run in to him just before he left the hospital from a prior surgery. The rooms are really nice an roomy, but you have to be sure you get the right one. You can tour the facility and confirm for yourself. The nurses are wonderful and constantly are helping out in any little detail. The doctors are as nice as they can be and it was a great experience to be there. I had an emergency c-section and beside going through the uneasy sensation of having the surgery, it was very helpful to count on the great staff to make my recovery and discharge smooth and quick. The meals are not great, but the personnel is very sweet and that makes a big difference. I love the hospital and if I had to give birth again, with no doubt I choose Montgomery again. Another plus is that you can preregister in order to avoid to do it the same day you get there for delivery. I wish you the best whether you choose or not Montgomery.

Hi, Stacy! I gave birth at Grand View Hospital 4 years ago. I was 47 at the time, and developed preeclampsia. I delivered 3 weeks early, still full term. I delivered on Thanksgiving Day, actually 4:04 the next morning. My OB was Mark Vizer, in practice by himself, I think he is PennRidge OB (I think the big practice is Stoneridge, but I could have it backwards.) Grand View was awesome. I think I didn't really have the option of no drugs, because my contractions started at 5 minutes apart. I've been told that the body's reaction to preeclampsia is to get the baby out, now! But they let me push for a couple of hours before going to C-section, and they never pushed an epidural on me, just IV stuff, plus magnesium sulfate (for the high b.p. 100/200 just before birth.) I was actually very pleased with my treatment, the hospital, the staff, but I had nothing to compare it to. Dr. Vizer was on call on that holiday, but he was my own OB. Also, he called in his office nurse, from home, the one I had been seeing at the office for 7 months, for my delivery, in the middle of the night! I thought that was pretty cool. I think Grandview has had a 5 star OB dept. for several years, and is expanding that dept. Good luck!

I gave birth at Bryn Mawr Hospital in June and I was very happy with the whole experience. The staff was great and the accommodations were nice. I was able to keep my baby with me overnight in my single room and my husband was able to stay over as well.
