Looking for New Washer and Dryer

I am looking to buy a new washer and dryer, but I am so overwhelmed. In our old house, the washer was left by the previous owner and we bought a new dryer. Both appliances were very basic; the washer has hot, warm, cold water knob and then Permanent Press, Delicate and Regular wash. THAT'S IT!! No fancy buttons that do everything under the sun. My dryer was the same. They both did a great job washing and drying my clothes and I never had any complaints. SO, my question is, what is the difference and the big deal about spending all that money on those W/D that do all that stuff! Does anyone have just your basic W/D? I guess I just want a L. insight on those one's that have all the bells and whistles and those that don't. Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

I bought a simple washer and dryer, I got the Maytag Brand. I've used the fancier ones and I did love them but my washer/dryer do just fine.

I wouldn't buy the Maytag brand again, I would buy a simple washer/dryer again but would have done more homework and research.

IF I had the money I would buy the Samsung Front Loading Machine but I just don't have that kind of money.

I went from basic on the washer to bells and whistles, but my dryer, unfortunately, is still basic. There are definitely benefits to the bells and whistles. I love the front loading. I am short and was always diving into the machine to get everything out of the top loader. There are preset selects for the types of wash you do, helps when my brain has shut down for the night. The HE lets me use a lot less soap, and the washer also uses less water, since it determines how much it needs itself. I can give clothes a boost if they really need it and can even throw handwashables in there without worrying. It spins them so much better, too, which makes them dry faster. I cloth diaper, so the new washer was necessary when we had our first. We love our Samsung.
For the dryer, we would love to also get the Samsung, but have to save up for it. Our basic takes soooo long to dry clothes, and sometimes it takes two cycles. This seems like such a waste of electricity to me.
It really is a preference thing and what your needs/wants are.

We got new Whirlpool w/d (stack-able because of the small space)and I must say that the front load is great if you remember to wipe out the rubber rim where the water collects (the tech also said if you don't do laundry often dump out leftover water from the dispenser). I think if you have a good washer it seems to me that air is air, hot, sorta hot, cool and no heat at all but I am no expert. Had a basic ge dryer (I think it was ge) and it ran great. Good luck.

Hi J.,

We have a pretty large family (6 of us altogether in the house) and my husbnad is military so it's like he has two sets of laundry on any given day. Then we have a 9 yr. old daughter whose favorite passtime is changing her clothes and then matching her outfit with my lipgloss. Then there are the 3 and 4 year olds, fabulous but really messy and laundry makers through and through.

We have always had a standard washer and dryer. Basic cycles. No front loaders. My friend has the cadillac of laundry systems. That's right, it's a system. It does everything but give you dinner and a movie. I get overwhelmed. Too many options. Does it wash clothes? Can it dry them? I don't need it to light up, sing to me, it does not need an lcd screen, I don't need to be able to plug my ipod into it.

I jus bought brand new whirlpool appliances. Super plus capacity, top loading, basic cycles, but now I have (count 'em) FOUR temp options - cold, COOL, warm, and hot. I love them. They do the only thing I really need them to do. They clean and dry clothes. I didn't pay more than $450 for each machine.

Don't buy into the hype, J.. Just because something can steam your clothes while it lights up and plays a L. tune, doesn't make it better. Just fancier and twice the price.

L.

When my husband and I moved into our current house from our old apartment, we had to find a washer & dryer really quickly - and as cheap as possible. I found a guy on Craigslist that was selling a practically brand new washer and dryer for only $350 total. They are the super simple ones - like what you had... we haven't had any problem with either of them... but, my parents have those super fancy front-loading washer/dryer with the pedestals... and my mom has a never-ending battle with them. I think they've had to have Sears come out to service them at least 3-4 times within the past 4 years that they've had them.
I think sometimes when they try to make things too fancy with all those extras, they just become more of a hassle! I guess the front-loading ones use less water and less detergent... but they do cost more - and I don't think you'd really notice any "savings" since anything you'd be saving on your water bill/on detergent, you're actually paying out for the washer in the first place!
